I heard pilot + 3 passengers on board.

It was an Aztec which doesn't hold 22 people.

The latest new that I heard was 6 people including the pilot found alive in a lifeboat. Good news.

Over here we have heard it was only 4. We also heard a 14 year old girl's body was found first this morning. Later on rescuers were sent out to the waters by Saba Rock where two were in the water waving hoping to be saved. The fourth, I don't know. Hopefully all have been found and alive as so many rumors have been going around since this morning.

What widely varying reports! The news items I read say it was a small plane registered in Anguilla and piloted by Kirby Hodge from that island. It had delivered newspapers to St Croix and was en route to St Thomas when it went down 8 miles off STT. The pilot was confirmed dead and his two passengers missing.

I heard it earlier today but didn't want to post anything in case the next of kin had not been notified.

That would be good news - except that report was posted at noontime today and reports since then - in the last hour - say 1 dead three missing. Good gracious, so many varying reports from so many sources!

The VI version is very different from the Sint Maarten version.

Coconut Telegraph this morning says one of the downed passengers was local STX attorney Darwin Carr. Unconfirmed but reliable source. Any truth to that?

sigh.....my concern with this crash is why did it take approx 2 hrs to realize that the plane was missing and for emergency responders to be notified? I have so many questions with this crash.

There's room for a lot of improvement between port authority and vitema.

My understanding is that the pilot was flying VFR and did not file a flight plan. He also did not request traffic advisories from San Juan Approach so no one was paying attention to him on radar.

These are two things that a pilot can do to make sure that someone is watching out for them, neither is required legally.

Legally he is only required to contact STT tower before he reaches their Class C airspace, which is 5 miles from the airport assuming that he was below 1900'. He was released from control by STX tower when he crossed the north shoreline of St Croix heading to STT. During the over water portion of his flight he was on his own unless he contacted San Juan Approach for traffic advisories, which is voluntary for VFR flights.
