Pre Move Visit/Employment

So, my plans were to apply for a variety of jobs followed by flying to down for a pre-move visit and interviews. After applying to the schools, the hotels, department of sports, parks and recreation, and even public area cleaner I have not received any leads yet.

Is it wise to continue searching for jobs pre-move visit or should I search for job during a pre-move visit? Face to face is always better, but if I come up empty I can't continue flying down to find jobs.

Any advice, thoughts, or suggestions are always appreciated.

The lack of response may be because:
- It's holiday time here, and not much gets done from Thanksgiving to Three Kings Day (Jan 6).
- You're not here.
- You left voice messages or sent emails. Those often get ignored here. Try calling back until you get a live person.

Ditto what Bob said.

Also, when you come for your visit, use it to network. You may not get an offer, but get out there, meet the players, get your face and name around. If you do decide to move here, have a pad of 3- 6 months $$$ until you can get what you want.

You should get a local prepaid cell phone so you'll have a local number. You're less likely to get a response with a Stateside area code.

Get a local post office or private box number so you look like you're here. If you're interested in STT, call Messages Mail And More at 340-776-4324. They may be able to help you with both.

Volunteer locally in your area with a national non-profit like Red Cross or Habitat for Humanity. There may be someone in the organization who has contacts here. Check in with them when you get here.

Blackbeard's Castle on STT is usually hiring, so check with them. Pay is minimal, but it's a start.

Many employers simply ignore inquiries and applications from people who are not actually "on-island". Reason - most employers get inundated with resumes from "stateside" people who never actually show up so they (the employers) learned long ago not to waste their time. You'll have much better luck finding employment once you get her than you will trying to do it from afar.
