Islander,

Thanks so much for all the practical advice and info you've given on this message board. You're doing a superb job, man.

I have a 1992 Chevy Blazer. It's in good condition and I just had some work done on it but I am wondering if it will be able to handle the hills in STT. I wish there were hilly/ mountainous places close to my residence in the US where I can give it a test run but there really aren't any. By chance, have you seen any blazers on STT?

Also, how long does it take to drive from the easternmost point of STT to the westernmost point (or vice versa)? Or, more specifically, would you know how long it would take to drive from Brewer's Bay to Magen's Bay or from Magen's Bay to Red Hook? I am just trying to gauge the size of the island in terms of driving time.

Thanks,
Ryan S.

There are plenty of Blazers on island. Those ordered for here have a greater gear ratio than those ordered for a flat state. Check your rear end. There is a tag on it. The rear end should be a 4.10 or greater 4.56(could be to much), any of those flat landers have 2.83. It could be changed.
About driving times. Although the island is 13 miles long and 3 miles wide, it takes quite some time to get from one point to the other. From end to end, not accounting for traffic, it could take an hour. From Magen's to Brewers, at least a 1/2 hour. From town, where I am at. It could take me 1/2 hour to Red Hook, but I have done it sometimes in less than 15 minutes! All depends on traffic and familiarity with roads!

Ronnie,

Thanks a lot for the info. I will have to check into the gear ratio. I am currently in London and my blazer is in the US so I'll have to check it when I go back in 2 months. Would you know how expensive it is to change the gear ratio? Thanks again for the info.

Hello Ryan S.,

As mentioned lots of Blazers. And while the distance between places in terms of a straight line isn't far - straight isn't a word that would describe many of our roads... they wind up and down hillsides, through valleys, up mountains, around mountains... so short distances can take long drives (long in terms of being on a small island).

Red Hook to Magens is about 20 minutes. Brewers to Red Hook maybe 35 minutes. About 12-15 minutes to cross town if you started at Crown Bay all the way around to Havensight with moderate traffic, much longer in traffic, much shorter with no traffic and running all the stop lights (there are a few along that drive).

Islander,

Thanks. Yeah that's what Tobago is like. Takes forever to get to places because of the mountains and windy roads. But the distances in terms of time isn't bad at all.

I'm considering shipping my blazer to STT but with all the shipping fees, taxes, etc. it may come up to $2000.00. I'm wondering: Can I get a decent ride in STT for $2000 that would last at least a year?

Thanks,

Ryan S.

Hello Ryan S.

A decent car for $2000... you can get an alright island car for $2000. Will it last the year- probably/maybe. $2500-3000 you'd likely get a better used car and then figure you are going to sell it when you leave so will recoup your money anyway. Or ship your car, use it while here and then try and sell it on island rather then paying to ship it back.
