racism on the islands

We had an instance when a crucian man thought we were racist, so he was racist towards us, calling us names and actually punched my husband in the back of the head.
He was calling our white friends names because they wouldn't dance with him. My husband was telling him to stop calling our friends white mutterskunt and using racial slurs.
Maybe he had it in his head that all white folk are racist. They just didn't want to dance with him, because he would try to get up on you.

A couples weeks later, he told a friend of ours who was Crucian that we were racists, our friend said, they aint racist, they are my friends, you leave them alone.
The crucian man who thought we were racist came over and apologized to us. We accepted his apology. That was cool.

I think that a lot of the "racism" that people experience here can be due to sometimes new people not understanding local customs such as greeting people good morning etc.... I do also know that there can be some attitude between the islands especially STX and STT. That being said I think that the Crucians are very welcoming. I have lived in STT for 20 years and the past few have spent a extensive amout of time over in STX. In that time I understand now what I didnt for years as far as Crucians feeling a bit shafted as far as govt attention, monies, etc. Maybe it is just living here for so long but I find the states far more racist that here.....

are you talking about social programs (aka "free money") ?

we have learned (via what we did to the native americans and Alaskan Natives) that giving away "free money" is the QUICKEST way to "ruin" a people. We are now doing exactly that to ourselves.

It is much better to just quietly let people succumb to hunger, the elements or disease and scoop their bodies up.. Hey, you want free money, go scoop up some bodies.

OR stop subsidizing large farmers so local farmers have a chance?

Government intervention is never the answer, the government paying people to eat isn't helping those people... it's hurting them, it causes dependence and a lack of personal responsibility (see the two well documented examples above: Alaskan natives and Native Americans).

American farmers can grow food stuffs SO cheaply that we have pushed farming to the wayside in every other country (due to heavy subsidization of farming by the US gov); and we've been doing it since the 70's.

Why do you think Corn is in E V E R Y thing these days? because it's cheaper than dirt (due to government subsidization of corn farming)!

well that is certainly true, I see why they did it (STX already had a golden goose, STT needed to hang onto tourism) I think it should be based on population, not which island legislators like best.

and liquid, also why there is soy in everything these days

The United States currently pays around $20 billion per year to farmers in direct subsidies as "farm income stabilization"

Soy is #5 on the list (Corn is #1) 20B in food subsidy is pretty crazy (and that's just DIRECT payments, not to mention all the other avenues for subsidy)

Hey everyone

I try to keep up with the various discussions on this forum as a means of preparation for our upcoming move to St. Croix and as a way to curb the anticipation for our move.

I have found this particular subject somewhat interesting and felt inclined to respond. As a "boy of the south" (southern mainland US) the issue of racism has been a reality of my entire life. Growing up and living in the south most of my life, I have been exposed to racist attitudes and practices on a regular basis.

My wife and I have been fortunate to have visited several Caribbean islands in the past 10 years and have been well treated by the majority population which is primarily of African or Hispanic descent. These visits have been primarily day visits on cruise ships and while we are very much about getting off the beaten path as tourists, we were still tourists for the day. Last December we visited St. Croix for a week and this past summer we were there for the month of July to get a better feel for "assimilation" into "island life". I am happy to say we never felt looked down upon or mistreated in anyway along the lines of race or for any other reason. Locals treated us with kindness and were very receptive to greetings and small talk. We made a couple of friends that I felt comfortable enough to ask directly about the feelings local have about tourists and transplants and the attitude expressed was generally positive. I can say MY experience was positive and I never experienced or witnessed racism during my time in St. Croix. With that said, there is hate and intolerance in every corner of the world. We just need to do our part to make sure it becomes a better place.

Yes the myopic idea of local farmers feeding the world sounds great on a bumper sticker but farming is a life, gardening is a hobby.

"ANY QUESTIONS?" Sure, I have a question: Does the person who wrote and posted this believe that families on food stamps (the only "free meals" I know of are from soup kitchens or are from Meals on Wheels to homebound, fixed-income senior citizens -- those moochers!) are "animals?" I'll take my answer ON the air, please.

I got lost on this thread (which I thought was about racism on the islands) a while back when the discourse meandered onto soy, corn and the social welfare system!

Even though you are reading this on a sophisticated electronic device, you are an animal. That's the most radical idea to come out of Charles Darwin's groundbreaking studies of evolution, and even today, it still freaks people out.

Well, I wouldn’t say all of you dress up! But seriously, are you asking if humans are animals? If so, the answer is yes-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s!!!
http://discoverykids.com/articles/are-humans-considered-animals/

It is ridiculous to say that humans are different than animals Humans are indeed animals. Humans (homo-sapiens) evolved from other primates and developed increased dexterity and sentience. Of course, it is human nature to think ourselves special, or somehow a higher class than "animals". Although it is obviously true that humans are far more intelligent than most other animals, that doesn't mean that we're not animals ourselves. No matter how far we evolve, no matter how superior we become, we will always be animals. It is not a bad thing, or something to resent. We would be lying to ourselves if we didn't classify ourselves as animals.

I wouldn't say I've experienced racism, but I'd say a Continental can't do certain things that other do. We all know it's normal to stop on the road in your car and talk to a friend on the side of the road. "Hey I know it and it doesn't bother me I just go around or wait" but if i do it as a main lander the guy behind me looses his mind. It's happened to me a few times.

There's racism and there's "born-here-ism", and because those matters are usually along color lines, they often look like the same thing but are not.
