Please help! I am losing my job by company divesting. My husband and I want to move to STX. We have been there and love it. However, what is the cost of living these days compared to South Florida? Are jobs abundant? We are use to the hurricane crap. I am currently making $50k a year as retail general manager. (not counting hubbies!) Our entertainment needs are minimal, diving a must. We only eat out maybe 2x a month. I am currently applying for positions there and have had no luck. Any help with that avenue would be great as well.
Currently, we pay the following.
3br Townhouse (kids are all gone) only need 1 br in STX. Rent $1275
water $35
electric $300
Food bill $160+ week
Gasoline $2.75 gallon

Please, all advice welcome!

You may not be hearing from employers because many pay no attention to resumes sent when you're not on island.

You can do it if you don't have kids or dogs. The monthly numbers are in the ballpark, maybe a little low, but still close. You will need two incomes and have some money in the bank when you move down. Around $10,000 would be a minimum.

You usually need to be on island to get a job. With your retail background I would bet you could get a job in a week. It probably will be for much less than you make now, but if you are good you will move up fast.

goodluck

your electric will likely be more here. we have a 3 bedroom, no dryer, no dish washer, no air conditioner, we are generally not home during the day as we both work and our electric bill last month was 277.00 this month 198.00 gas is pretty much the same here as in the states food is at least twice what it is in he states. our rent is about what yours is really i think the cost of living is more here than in the states. but still not a bad place to live.

Water will be more if you don't have a cistern and enough rain. Figure $0.04 a gallon plus delivery. Unless you live in town no city utilities.
