Good Day all:
Coming over to STT May 4 - 9 for PMV. Have appts set up for housing, going to stores, Post office etc.
Thinking about renting a motorcycle instead of a car. I saw the weather said scattered rain that week and I am aware that the roads get slick, but I am a very experienced biker and am thinking that this may be an economic and efficient way to get around the island.
Bad idea or good idea?

Just one person's opinion but unless you plan on using a motorscooter as your primary means of transportation when (and if) you move to the island I don't think its the best of ideas. One of the main purposes of a PMV is to give you a "feel" for what everyday life is like in the islands. Using a scooter may not expose you to the same "everyday challenges" you will encounter with a car, namely dealing with parking (as in the lack thereof), negotiating the traffice and narrow streets, etc. Getting around the island by scooter is not the same as doing it in a car.

If you're not familiar with the streets and traffic down here, a motorcycle is not going to be a very good way to either enjoy or learn the island, even for an experienced rider. What you save in rental costs you could very, very easily be paying (and then some) at the hospital instead. That said, I ride daily and love it -- but I learned the roads on four wheels first.
Do a search on "motorcycle" or "scooter" for past threads on this topic that will give you more awareness of the issues for bikers here.

Oh, and Afriend makes a really excellent point above -- two of the big benefits of life on two wheels are parking options and spending very little on gas. If anticipate that your main form of transport after you move will have a roof, definitely rent a car for the PMV so you can see how long it takes to find a space and how much a fillup hits your wallet vs. wherever you live now.

I am hoping my main form of transport is my motorcycle.
It sounds like what I should do is rent a car for a few days to get to know the roads, traffic, pot holes, etc. Then rent a scooter the last day.

That sounds like a decent plan -- although I'd recommend renting a motorcycle, not a scooter, if that's what you plan to ride -- as there's many things you can't carry on a bike that are easy to put at your feet on a scoot. The scooter shops rent dual-sports and roadsters as well.
