Roomate wanted on STJ

Hi all,

I live on STJ in a 3 bedroom apartment that I currently share with 4 other people. 2 of them are moving back to the states in May and I'll have an empty room for rent.

We are right in Cruz Bay and in walking distance to town. We've been living and working here since October and can provide alot of assistance to a new arrival on island. We all work in bars/restaurants.

The apartment has a washer/dryer and a cool deck. No drugs and no pets.

I can arrange for something if you need to move down earlier than May 1. It's a big place and we have a futon in the living room that can be used temporarily.

The lease belongs to me and runs through October. This room could accomodate 2 people in twin beds (as they are now) or a couple in one bed.

The rent is $1200/month plus electric, cable and telephone. We split the bills so they usually add up to nothing. I think our cable was $12 a person.

I need first/last month's rent and a security deposit.

Please email me with any questions.

Is that 1200 for the apartment total or 1200 per person?

$1200 is the rent for the one room. It can be one or two persons.

So your total rent is ? split 4 ways = ? sorry a little unclear. It looked like an awesome deal - $1200 /4 = $300/mo per person. that would be sweet........but? How much is it really?

Hey Rich

None of my business...but...if you are asking $1200 a month for the third bedroom in your apartment, then that would mean that the monthly apartment rent is ...$3600 a month or $43200.00 per year. I am sure you wouldn't ask a new renter to pay more than their fair 1/3 share of the basic rent? It does seem that rents are getting out of control on St John. Is all this accurate??

Folks,

Yep, living in STJ is expensive. The money is also much better for someone working in the bar/restaurant industry.

We live really well in an awesome place. I found my roommates on this forum half a year ago.

We have 3 rooms. The room I am currently renting is $1200/mo. Currently the only places available and posted in Connections are upwards of $1800/mo for a studio.

With 2 folks in there, it's $600/mo. For STJ, that's very cheap.

Bonus is that we know everyone in the bar/restarant business and can be an asset to helping a newcomer finding a job.

Maybe it's not for everyone, but it certainly is for someone.

Thanks!!

Rich-I'd be very interested in hearing more about the apartments available on STJ. I'm moving there mid-September and of course, I've got some jitters about not finding a place or work. How tough do you think this is going to be? I've been in the restaurant/bar industry for a long time (as a part-time gig to my current full-time career) and plan to try to pick up a bar/restaurant gig down there. Also, one of my best friends lived there for two years, so i've spent some time down there. My questions....
1. How hard is it to find a bar/restaurant job? What kind of pay are you looking at with that kind of job? I've heard anywhere from 200-600 a night high season.
2. How hard is it to find a place? My friend was sleeping on someone's couch for about three months. And for the remaining 2 years, someone was sleeping on hers.

Thanks for the input. I can't wait to get there. It's so distracting to my everyday just thinking about it.

Wow! $3600 a month for a 3 br! I should be raising my rents! I don't think those rates are the norm. I knowo of a studio that was found last summer for $850 in a very nce house and area. Likewise, while I told two ladies that it would be difficult to find a place and job in a day, They did! They landed a job in a busy bar, as well as an apartment for $800 right up the street from work. This $3600 place is quite high, but worth looking into if they can get you connected to the job market, but remember, there are other options out there.

i second that. as much as i love STJ, it would be a cold day in hell before i paid $1200 a month for just a room.

One room that became available in April has already been filled. I have another room coming available in May (actually April 20th).

I agree that there are cheaper places on STJ to live. I also know that whenever I have people over my place, they can't stop talking about how awesome it is. The washer/dryer is the most popular luxury. Like I said before, it may not be for everyone, but it certainly is for someone.

My previous roomates had been living here since October without any type of binding lease, so they must have thought it was worth it or they would have bailed on me long ago.

When I first found this apartment, I found my roommates on this very forum. We were all in the states and wanted to join forces to get a cool place to share instead of a mediocre place to ourselves.

(found the old thread! https://www.vimovingcenter.com/talk/read.php?4,23186,23317#msg-23317)

(Copy/paste from the roommates thread)

Hey all,

I've lived on STJ since September and have a lease on a 3br apartment in walking distance to town.

One of my roommates is leaving on April 20th and I will have a bedroom available then.

About the place: 3 bedrooms. I'm in the master bedroom and live alone. There is another single male in the other bedroom. We have a washer/dryer, which is a huge convienence and time saver. We are walking distance to town. The place is a newer building with a huge kitchen, living room and a deck. We run central air 24/7 and are bug/pest free. No pets, smoking on deck only, absolutely no drugs.

My previous roommates were a couple in one room and 2 sisters in the other room, so we had 5 people living comfortably. They had been here since the beginning of my lease in October.

The available room can accomodate 2 people in twin beds if you wish to split the rent.

We are on cistern water. Since October we have only needed 2 water deliveries of 4200 gallons at $250 a load.

We split cable, telephone, and electric. Total cable is $80, telephone is usually around $60, and electric is $300. When split 5 ways these bills are pretty painless, but with 5 servers/bartenders in one apartment, we weren't exactly hurting for money. Things can be adjusted as needed.

We are all young people in the bar/restaurant business and that should be taken into account when you consider living with us. We get home around 4am pretty often in various states of intoxication. 😉

The room's rent is $1200. That's if you want the room to yourself. If you decide to split it with another body, you'll cut that in half. Either works for me, I was already used to living with 4 other people.

Sure seems like someone is trying to scam everybody! Sad.No way would I pay that kind of money to live with 2 other folks I don't know. Sure hope the place is a mansion! Swimming pool, jacuzzi, great walk in shower/bathroom with bidet - oh and a great view of the water and a garden out back.

Everyone has different opinions regarding what makes a comfortable living space. Like I said, I met my previous roommates on this forum and we all lived happily for the season.

Yeah, that's right. I'm trying to scam everybody. I don't actually have an apartment on STJ but I am the last surviving relative of Dr. Mubunde Owaro and if you's send me your informations I would be most glad to wire you one meellion dollars.

:roll eyes:

Hey Rick. I am not interested in the room because I can't afford $1200/mth..however i was thinking you might be able to point me in the right direction to find rental property for me and my friend. We are planning on moving in July but I am not having any luck. Also, we are in our mid 20's...is there a good crowd there for people our age???

mea...you will both find jobs quite easily...although june is dead season here, although it will not be a problem. finding housing is another story. Rich (the person starting this thread) is a complete jackass and manages Duffys Love Shack...the cheezest dance spot around. his place is high with a view and is expensive but some people will bottomfeed and new people. i was taken advantage when i first arrived but you just have to be picky--even when it might sound good. now i live in a 2 bdr. with a treetop view---not an ocean view and i pay 900 mo for the whole place. try to rent from a west indian (local) rather than an american as they are strange but honest. good luck email me if youd like----vagus@post.com
