You are awsome Eve. I am going for the hell of it. I am young and can, basically is what it boils down to. I am just ready to have a good time and be a bum for a while. I may not get down there until sometime in June but I am willing to be the point man. I am 24, with very little care or worry. One of the easiest going guys your ever meet. I attended Texas A&M Univ.

This for our secretary Eve:

As far as budget goes I'm looking to bring anywhere from $2,500 to $3,500 (pending how many people are going to be in on this) As it stands we got 6 people so far (Myself, Leslies, Leslies' friend/roommate, Kyle, Kyle. P. and Eve) (I just waiting to hear from UVI whether I got in or not. I think I got a descent shot considering my grades and my letters of reccommendation (all of which were extremely good),) so count me in.

Eagan sorry you had to bow out. Tough break....

As far as smoking goes, if nobody else smokes, I would be willing to smoke outside. That nots important though.

Oh by the way, I speak with a very heavy Boston accent. (I don't pronounce my "R"'s) and have a slight stutter. (Just so the group knows).

Thanks

Dave

Now how do ya'll like that. I even update the post as info comes in. Still got lots of questions marks though....

I have a feeling Eagen will make a good roommate and is still displaying his interests in other posts. I'm not counting him out yet....

But Dave let me tell ya. I'm just performing a free service for you which utilizies my orginizational skills and record keeping talents. I'm actually looking at business oppurtunities on St. Croix. Besides, My husband would question me looking into sharing a house with a bunch of young college studs. Man.... I loved college (15 years ago!) Yummy people watching from what I recall. I hope you all get down to St.T and live a different reality for awhile before marriage, kids and parents get in the way. (NOT to say its bad, just more difficult, so please don't jump on me.) In other words, Dave, I'm not a sixth. Although I'll visit from St.X some day.

I'm a smoker as well so don't apoligize to me. When I was on St. X everything smells so fresh, and it is always so nice out, that you want to sit outside anyways. That definately does not make a difference, but I hate listening to people talking about it to me and the dirty looks. So it is a mentionable topic.

Hey Ya'll,

WOW, I'm getting really excited knowing how many people are doing the same thing.
I am still unsure about which month we're (my friend and I) moving down. So I don't want to committ to anything yet. If we don't all live together it will be fun to all hang out. Dave, I'll surely be able to understand you, my dad's from Boston also. I too am a smoker but enjoy smoking outside. Kyle P, I'm just looking to have a good time as well. Keep me in mind with all the plans.

By the way, my first name is Patrick. I have applied to the Maho Bay Camps work-exchange program for the month of September. I am hoping to get this position so I have a concrete excuse for moving to St. Thomas. Although the actuall work program is on St. John, I would use my month there to try to secure employment and and place to live on St. Thomas. For the Maho Bay program, you work about 4 hours a day in exchange for free lodging and discounted meals. I am an ex-tennis teaching professional from Michigan, and am now working for a mortgage company in Michigan. I just can't get the dream of living in the Virgin Islands out of my damn head.

For those of you trying to put a group house together, I am interested, but hesitant nonetheless. I will continue to check this message board, as I do nearly 100 or more times a day at my desk job.

Patrick Eagan
P.S. Have you guys ever been to the Virgin Islands? I've traveled there on vacation only, about 5 or so times. Even if all of us can't coordinate moving down and living together at the same time, we could at least keep each other posted as to our whereabouts so we can have a safe haven/group of stateside friends to lean on.

Patrick,

I think we have exchanged messages before, you work in Grand Rapids....correct? My brother actually did the Maho Bay program with two of his friends when he was in college, but I think he did for three months. He tells a great story about his first day of work at Maho when he was pruning banana trees. During his hiatus the island was hit by a hurricane, so they were able to earn cash if they worked over their daily four hour requirement. It seemed to start a trend in his life...after that trip he study in Africa, Nepal, and is now in a graduate school in Costa Rica.

Chad-
Yep, it's the same Patrick you spoke with months ago. Sounds like you are moving to St. Thomas soon. Glad to know that the Maho Bay experience for your brother was at least adventuresome. I am hoping to get the position and then stumble into something permanent once I'm there. Seems like this is how many people start a life down there, by going down and then kinda getting lucky with a job, apartment, friends, etc. If you happen to get settled down there and need some fresh business help, look me up. I graduated with a degree in Sports Management and Communications from U of Michigan in the spring of 2003, but have great professional skills despite limited experience. These winters are too depressing to live out anymore in Michigan.

I rode on a catamaran day sail on Christmas 2002 in St. Thomas. The captain was from New York and had sailed Lake Michigan many times in regattas. He and his wife lived on their sail boat in the harbor in St. Thomas. I remember she worked in a law firm, or real estate firm, and actually might have owned it. He used to be in the NYPD until they relocated to St. Thomas to run their sailing business. He had a first mate who was a very nice girl, probably 27 or so, from Canada. I remember he had a big toe cut off. You might ask around down there at the docks and see if any of the captains know this guy, and see if he could help you get started sailing.

If you strike gold, or any job that may have more openings, please let me know..

Patrick Eagan
P.S. I used to work the sailboat races on Spring Lake, where I'm from, at the Yacht Club. Do you know any of those people?

Alright, we finally got something loosely in the works. Leslie glad you are aboard and glad you are a smoker 🙂 🙂 The 2 Kyles, glad that you are involved in this too. I already have ordered my passport and I am waiting to hear from UVI whether I got in or not.. I notice they take their sweet time down at that school.

Is anybody who is tenetatively involved in this bringing their significgant other with them or are you going to break it off before you leave? (Just curious)

Good Morning Patrick,

Ah yes, good old Spring Lake Yacht Club...boat chop city!!!

It's time for another round of the name game! Lets see; Ross & Nills Rudedhal (I actually taught sailing with Ross for summer), Kyle VerPlank, Jamie & Rob Kimball, Suzie Molesta, Steve Fox, Kevin Havellin, Justin Hood (he was one of my roommates in the past), Eric aka Captain P (I bought a C-Scow from him for the C-Scow World Regatta at Lake Delevan). I spent my fair share of time at the Shrimp Boils and the Black Sheep Parties. What year did you set marks out there? It's been a while since I have raced at the Spring Lake Yacht Club, as I have moved out of scow racing and back into keel boat racing.

I will definitely keep my head up for potential jobs for you. Did you know that the St. Thomas Yacht Club has tennis courts? You might be able to drum-up a few private lessons to help out with some of the bills? Heck, I could use a lesson...my serve has gone to the birds!

Ah, I too have been to the Black Sheep summer blowout. Kyle Verplank and I are pretty good friends. We went to Michigan together, although he's a few years older. I know all those other people as well. I set the bouys in the summer of 1999 I believe. I sat out on that tiny little boat and took orders from a heavy-set older fellow from Grand Rapids.

Anyway, I sure wish getting a job in St. Thomas was like the states. Unfortunately, you have to take a financial risk and just head down there. You're lucky to have a partner like Dawn who wants to make the move with you. Seems like most women I know would say it's a crazy idea, so she must be cool. I know many people who are affiliated with Hope College, as well as went there for schooling. We could probably do the name game and figure out some common acquaintances .

The first mate I told you about down there on the catamaran in St. Thomas said she flew down from Canada with 2 months worth of spending money to get by on. She stayed with a friend on St. John who was living there at the time. She went down to the docks and just kinda talked herself up I guess, and landed her day-sail gig. If you can find a job like that, I see no reason to ever leave. I think that with all of these Americans on this site wanting to move down there, we should all get together and start a company that helps people like ourselves, such as with lodging, employment, getting adjusted to life, etc. Like an American Hostel in the Virgin Islands. Anyway, let us on this board know how your pre-move trip goes. If you remember any other things your bro said about Maho Bay Camps, let me know.

Whats up everyone-
I just had to say "hi". I will be down in August to go to the University. I'm 19, and from Baltimore. Not sure where I will be staying or anything like that, but I am very interested in getting to know all of you-although I would be the baby in the group. Feel free to drop me an e-mail.

Good Morning Patrick,

You can imagine the astonishment that I had when I woke up this morning, there was this big bright ball in the sky! Do you happen to know what that is called again? It's been so long since we seen the sun here in Michigan, it's easy to forget what it looks like. Anyway, Dawn is great and I'm very lucky to have her! You are right about the financial risk required to move to the islands, but we have been saving up and are in a good spot, money-wise, to make the move. I'm confident that we will be able to find employment on the island, that maybe slinging lines as a mate on one of the day cruises (aka...party barges) but it will be a job. Once we are there, we can build on it.

Melissa, I am also from Baltimore and also moving in August. I am moving to St. Croix. I need to finish up an internship so I can graduate from Towson. Email me back before the move because two heads are always better than one.

Well the list just keeps on growing... Glad to see more people are speaking up and becoming interested.

Bought my plane tickets yesterday for my "scouting" trip to sTT. I'll be down from June 2nd till the 10th if anyone else will be down there. I'm not making any more plans until I get down there and see / experience the island for myself. If anyone will be down there then let me know.

I don't think that I am going down until the end of June now, so unfortunately I will not be there then. I am really ready to go and I hope that we can all get this together.

Dave,
Hi, my name is Jenna and I am 18 and am moving to St. Thomas in August to go to school at UVI-St. Thomas. Just a word of advice keep calling the school and asking for information continuously, they will eventually send it to you. So when are planning on moving to St. Thomas? And how old are you? I will be on my own when I move so maybe we could meet up with all the friends you have been talking to on the message board. Just let me know what's up and if you get accepted to UVI. Best of Luck to you! I graduate from high school in a month so I am very excited.
Jenna

so you don't have a roommate correct? do you mind if I ask where you will be working? What info do you have on living in a villa at first? I may do something like that. Are you planning a pre-move trip, if so when? I was looking at airfare around may 13-17, I found a round trip fare for $341, how does that sound?
