Hi, I've been on STT for a while and am still not sure of the proper use of the car horn. Is it one beep to cut in to traffic and 2 beeps to let someone go ahead? Maybe its always 1 beep? Any other things that locals know about driving etiquette? Mainlanders complain that all of the horn use is rude in their own culture but it seems to me to be a friendly way of communicating here.
Thanx - congasan

Flash your lights to allow someone to turn in front of you. I don't use the horn but wave thanks to whomever lets me into traffic. I don't think there's some code of 1 beep or 2.

Same with me trade. I wave while turning the wheel. Don't think I could find the horn in time, and when I did, I would probably lay on it too hard...I also flash my lights for people to turn in front of me.

With its wide variety of uses and meanings, the honk has really lost its purpose, except that a long honk usually means someone's mad.

There's so much honking going on that if someone actually used it as originally intended (as a warning), I probably wouldn't notice.

I give two short beeps for everything. I can always tell a tourist because you get one long beep and a hand gesture that goes with it.

I'm not sure of the rules, but I have always thought two quick beebs on the horn are much more friendly then the single beep.
So to let someone pull in front of me I give them the double beep.
I flash my lights when there is alot of traffic around and a car is coming directly towards me with the right blinker on.
When I'm allowed to enter traffic I give a wave as I drive past, sometime Ill give the ol' double beep then also.
I think one long horn blast should be a warning that there is danger.
If those aren't the rules I think they should be.
drive safe folks.

i only lay on the horn loud and long when people from the womens coalition are parked on the road so as to not allow anyone else to pass. other than that i just wave when people let me in. like the other poster, i too probably would not be able to find the horn in time

Yes and that double beep will also count as a hello when passing a friend you recognize, as well as the light flash. Not both at the same time.

Rules of thumb on STX

One short beep means "go ahead, I'm letting you out". May also be a flash of your head lights.
Two short beeps means either "thank you" or "how's your mom and them?"
One long blast means "You're and idiot. Get off the road".

I`d say this is also accurate in STT.
