Hi all,

We're moving to St. Croix in January.

I'm in the middle of trying to find a shipper to move a 2 bedroom household from the New York City area. There are several shippers advertised. For instance, Crowley, Bob Lynch, and Viking seem to have a lot of advertising on the board and moving guide.

I'm wondering if any one out there would share any good and bad experiences they have had so I can make an educated choice whom to hire?

Thanks!

Ace

Hello ACE,
I am currently in the same situation and will be on island Jan/Feb. Right now I am working with Flemming on STX. I have been very happy with my dealings so far. You may want to give them a call. Hope to see you on island soon!

I hope both of you are aware that most rental properties come furnished, as do most houses for sale. Sometimes buyers want to refurnish their newly purchased properties but most landlords won't let you throw out their furnishings to put yours in their place. Many people arrive with containers of household furnishings and then learn after spending $10K in shipping that they will be spending more to store their things.

Island Rat --Thanks for your helpful post. I've read other good things about Flemming, as well. Do you have a contact number or web address for them?

As for "most of the rental properties being furnished" there are plenty of properties in the Avis that are unfurnished as well finding unfurnished places through locals, ie friends, family members, and church groups. (Not all of us moving to STX are without island contacts...)

Best,

Ace

Ace,

I used Crowley to ship a two bedroom from upstate NY to Puerto Rico. This is what I learned, shed excess stuff, its easier to travel with money than belongings, rent a storage unit, pack your stuff up their, bring down only what you absolutely need, you can always go back and ship stuff later.

My property was in storage, in boxes while I house hunted, ( I was renting) I was attacked by bugs, mold etc....books got ruined, leather got ruined.

The actual shipping with Crowley was excellent, I wish I had traveled lighter.

Hope this helps.
Cheers, Peter

Almost everyone who moves here, says the same thing - I brought too much stuff!! Or at least - I brought the wrong stuff. Take a good, hard look at what you're bringing. And post again after you're here for 6 months and tell us how it went.
