short term rental leading to a long-term rental

hi everyone!

my evil witch of a boss won't let me go down to the VI for a week next april to scout for an apt. she's threatened to fire me if i go down to look for an apt. and then come back to work out my final notice for her. so...

to hell with her! i will quit my lame job all together in april and am contemplating living temporarily somewhere in STJ during that month while i look for an apt. my goal is to take occupancy of an apt. in STJ in early may. my questions:

1-is this a good approach? a friend of mine went down for a week, found her apt, and in a few weeks returned to claim it, but as i mentioned, my boss will fire me if i do this. such a shame b/c it's the route i'd really like to take. she's the vidictive sort. can you tell?

2-i'm looking to do all this on STJ. does anybody have any suggestions on a short-term rental?

3-can you bring your pets into such an arrangement? i don't think my cats would like to be boarded for a month.

thanks to all who respond!

no clue on pets, or stj,

but I would think it would work ok if you came and stayed in a hotel/short term place for a couple weeks till you find a more long term deal... since that is waht Im doing, it must be a good idea 😛

on stj, this becomes a little tiny bit more difficult, as the choices for affordable short term rentals are very limited.

some people have successfully stayed at cinnamon bay campgrounds for weeks, even months, before finding something... but i dont think they would allow any sort of pets. as a side benefit, im sure you would be very very active in looking for a good spot to permanently live if you were camping for that first week+

tamarind inn, a small hotel in town, used to be the best cheap choice for kids moving down [it's where i stayed years ago, before new owners and new prices],,, they still have single rooms with shared bath and fairly inexpensive rates [again, compared to the rest of the island ;)] [theyre availbale somewhere online too]

anyways... april should be a nice time to come down, as some places are starting to empty out and apartments should be relatively easy to find...

good luck!

hey everyone-

after debating over this issue all night, i have come to the conclusion that i will stay @ tamarind court in STJ for a week or so while i pound the pavement in search of a home and a job.

i'm also considering cinnamon bay but am too afraid to stay there alone. last time i was there, eddie (my sig. other) was with me, and i still freaked out badly when a donkey attacked our tent! :O

i still plan on quitting my job in early april. this will undoubtedly be the most stressful time of my life, as i will have quit my job here, be almost out of my current apt., and still have no idea exactly where i'll live and work in the VI. so i hope to at least score an apt. during my april visit or i'm SOL.

heh... re cinnamon... apparently "scarecrow" tactics work for the donkeys. other people have had similar problems-- and as a result put cans on strings [which, when the string is disturbed by donkey, knock into each other and make noise....].. im sure other similar methods would work as well =)
