Hey again everyone,

I have just moved here 2 weeks ago today, and my dogs are back home in Florida (miss 'em so bad!), but when they get here after the first of the year, where would be a good place to let them run? Do you guys have any dog parks or beaches that I can take them to? I read about the Barktoberfest recently held. Sounded like fun, maybe another one could be planned for the future? I'd be interested, if there were another get together, BTW - I'm on STX. Thanks to all!

Candi,
Barktoberfest was held on St Thomas, not sure of STX has an equivalent. I do know however that on STX they hold a Blessing of the Animals (St Francis) and, as far as I know, we aren't so lucky on STT. Whenever I am in STX it seems that dogs have more free rein than on STT, but I'll leave this ino to the residents.

I have often seen Cane Bay Beach turn into Canine Bay Beach on Sunday afternoons. Just be real sure to clean up after your guys!

Thanks for the info. I will certainly check it all out. In Florida, where I just came from, dogs being able to go on the beach is strictly forbidden, so I want to be sure before I get fined or anything. If anyone knows a little more info., keep me posted. I'd even agree to meet someone so they could play with other dogs. Anyone game?

There is a great little spot on the east end that is off the road, secluded. We take our dogs swimming there. I couldn't tell you were it is but I could show you sometime. If your dogs like to play with others my dogs would love a play date at the beach.

Oh definately! that sounds like a plan! I'll keep in touch, and when you get back from your holidays, then we can get together. LOL

Candi,

Although it's too late for you now, there are some beaches in Florida that allow dogs. In case you're interested (after the fact) here's the guide: http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/travel/guides/beach/beachstateFL.shtml

Richard,

I just moved from the St. Pete area, and there were plenty of dog parks for them to socialize and run, but I haven't heard of anything like that here. Just thought I'd throw that thought out there, cause when the dogs socialize with their kind, I can do the same. It's a great way to meet other "dog people", if you know what I mean.

There are many local (non-resort) beaches where people let their dogs run. If you don’t already have it, you can get the “Pocket Map: St. Croix” (put out by Cartographers Limited) from the Custom House In Frederiksted or the Scale House or tourism office in Christiansted. Many hotels have it, too.

I’ve seen dogs at these beaches:

EAST

Knight Bay
Coakley Bay
Prune Bay
Southgate (Saltpond) Bay
Turner Hole (the residential stretch east of the Divi hotel)

WEST

Cane Bay
West End beaches north of Frederiksted
Manchenil Bay

At a few beaches, especially out east, you’ll see signs saying No Dogs because of endangered turtles and their eggs. I assume you know they need a certificate of health to get into the USVI and that they should be on heartworm medication.

Yes, I am aware of the certificate of health, current shots, they're already on heartworm preventative (just moved from Florida, it's a must). Thank you so much for the info. on the beaches! I can't wait to take them, and I am familiar with the Turner Hole area, but not the Southgate Bay. It's not close to the nature reserve, is it? I have already read up on stray dogs that run loose at the reserve, and how they're trapped and later euthanised or put up for adoption if possible. So sad! But then so is killing the birds and their nestlings that live there. Another topic for another day I suppose. Thanks again for your help!
