My husband is a Clinical Psycologist (Ph.D.) in California. We want to come to live and work in the Islands and I have been given the task of locating employment. I am in the hospitality industry so I guess that will not be a problem to find something. I have not, however, been able to find any information on the healthcare industry. We are open to any of the islands, but prefer St. Croix. We will try to spend a month or so this winter visiting and looking. It would be nice to connect with employers before visiting. Can anyone help?

You have the right idea to visit for a month to find out. There is only one hospital there which is government run. This may give you some leads.

Thank you for your leads. I have tried both on the net and have not been able to get much info. I can't seem to find out about government lic. requirements or where psycologists are employed. I see that the hospital does have a department of behavioral health. I am going to call them. If anyone knows a psychologist on the island that I could contact I would be very greatful. I may try my local library to see if they still carry phone books from the island. If anyone knows of any mental health clinics or crisis units this would be of help also. thanks

Hello,

The number for the Psychatric Unit of the Gov. Juan Luis Hospital is (340)7727364, Persennel is 7727331. Human Resources for the Health Department is (340)713-9932. Social Services is (340)7733079. Mental Health-Drug Dependancy is (340)773-1992

For Licensing and Consumer Affairs it is (340)7732226 they do general licensing for the USVI, St. Croix. However health professionals generally have to go through the Health Deparment.

This list does seem quite helpful. I'm wondering about working in St Croix or St Thomas. Does anyone know if there is there any needs for anesthesiologists at either of the hospitals?

You might want to call or visit and talk to the Chief of Surgery- Dr Frank Odlum at Schneider Regional (new name) on St Thomas. I don't know the name on St Croix, but if you call or go to the hospital, you'll find it! Good luck!

G Davies,
If you like I can put you in touch with the head of Anesthesiology at JFL (the hospital on St Croix.) Just email and I'll send you the info.

Ronnie...

So Dr. Grant is your cousin -- how cool is that? This confirms that while they may need six degrees of separation to connect in the rest of the world, there's only one degree ofseparation between you and anyone you need to know here in the USVI!

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Grant briefly last year, and thought she was delightful. I was also going to suggest her as a helpful contact, but will instead just enthusiastically point to you and say, "What he said!"

My family and I are considering relocating to St Croix to care for a family member who lives there. I am a NICU RN in the states and need to find work down there. My husband is a business owner and will be selling the it to move. I will be our only income for a while. Anyone know if this is even do-able. I can't find any information about salaries or even job openings. Please help.

The hospital is always in search of RN's. Search some of the past threads on this site for nursing and travel nursing questions and you will find contact info for people who have already gone through this process and also for some of the people at the hospital you can reach to apply or discuss the opportunities available.

Bonnie Lee- My husband is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. To gain employment here, (on St Croix) for ALL government jobs, you can get on a registry. This covers many positions in all different areas- from Dept. of Health, to residential, to DHS offices, etc. It was, however, quite a red-tape battle and took him several months of persistant leg work to get on the registry. You have to 1) be on-island and 2) stop in about twice a week to keep your paperwork moving through the system. There is a great need for therapists on island. Your welcome to private message us if you want more details.

Hi- I am a paramedic and I have been doing research to find jobs in the islands. I have heard that the ambulance services are based out of the hospitals, but I am finding it very hard to get more information than that. Does anyone know anything about the ambulance services around? Thank you- Elida

Elida: The EMS is part of the Health Department, but yes, they are stationed at the hospital. I am pretty sure that the pay is not up to stateside standards, but then neither is the training. They are not paramedics, but emergency medical techs.

If you're posting a general question on general job availability, you should probably go to the first post on this forum (New member/reader) and check all the extensive information already available. To cut to the basic chase, it's almost impossible to find employment without being here to meet prospective employers face to face, while it's also a very good idea to do a PMV to see if island living will suit you. Hope this helps and happy reading!
