Hello again everyone!
My friend Jaana and I will be making a pre-visit in the beginnnig of May to try and make some contacts and figure out housing. That leads me with two questions?
1. If we come in May for three days would it be better to try and stay in STT or STJ in terms of getting around and speaking with people? NOt sure where we would stay in STJ but we would be staying on the EAST end if we were to stay in STT.
2. As 20 year olds living there for the summer, do people think it would be better (i.e. safer, easier to get around, live, MAKE money) to be located in STJ or STT?
Finally, will anyone be around in the beginning of May that might be interested in telling us some hints about island life or just want to have a little get together? Either fellow 20 year olds just moving to the island or any of you who seem to already be living the good life there at any age? Thanks so much, exams have begun hard to think about with the Virgin Islands in such the near future!

Hello Patricia,

The decision of whether to stay on St. Thomas or St. John should be made based on where you want to live more... STT or STJ??

If you have a stronger desire to live on St. John then I would suggest staying in Cruz Bay. There are several small inns/guest houses there. More importantly there are shops, bars, restaurants, activities (boat rentals, dive shop), bank, churches, bakery, car rental offices... located in Cruz Bay. So if you are in the center of it all it will be much easier to speak with people, look at possible employment options etc. Also 'Connections' (a mail center, fax, bulletin board, internet all in one place) has a location in Cruz Bay - and thats a good place to get information on apartments etc.

I think either island would work. St. John is smaller so if you are close to Cruz Bay then you are close to everything. On St. Thomas you would need to use the bus, $1 rides or taxis to get around as the island is larger. Apartments are more expensive on St. John, so that's something to consider.

If you do choose to stay in East End - St. Thomas, you can take the ferry over to St. John quite easily and spend the day checking things out. And the same - should you stay on St. John you can ferry over to Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas.

Good Luck with your exams!
