I would like to visit St Thomas for a few months as I would like to work and live there even if for only a few months to better understand the culture and perhaps find myself a soul mate. A former boyfriend who I lived with in Orlando, Florida is from St Thomas and all I ever heard from him was how wonderful it was to grow up there. He is black I am white. I am reading now that there is a lot of discrimination over there between the blacks and whites. This is troubling to me.

I would like to find a job but this board only offers 2 jobs neither one I am suited for. I have a background as a Mortgage Loan Officer/Originator, Real Estate Investor and Debt Collector. I don't see any such jobs being offered.

ANY ADVICE ON FINDING A JOB IN ANY OF MY FIELDS OR DO I NEED TO START MY OWN BUSINESS IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS AND HOW DIFFICULT WOULD THAT BE TO DO?

To Houses4Rent,

You may find that time have changed. While living on St. Thomas I made friends with a few locals who grew up on St. Thomas. They often told me of their childhood and loved island life. They still live on island, but are not happy with the current turmoil the island seems to be going thru. They are in their early thirties with kids and are wanting to move stateside to raise their kids. They don't like the public school system and have many issues with jobs and government. They have family that moved stateside and won't move back until jobs, government, and crime has changed for the better. It seems that the bad is outweighing the good right now, but in time that will change.

If you want to meet a Caribbean man, just move to Atlanta, GA. There are many here. 🙂

Houses4Rent,
The banks here on St. Thomas will advertise Loan Originator positions from time to time. My only advice is if you want to pursue this position find out who is in charge of the Loan Dept and get in contact with them directly.

My back ground is banking and mortgage and when I first got here I thought about continuing with that line of work. I saw an ad in the paper and emailed my resume in. The H.R. office contacted me to tell me thanks but no thanks. I met the head of their loan division at a function a year later and in passing he asked me about myself and background, along the way also asked why I did not work here on the Island for a bank. He was shocked to find out I was declined even an interview at his bank and further shocked that he never saw my resume. The big thing that shocked him was I had 15yrs experience in the industry and the year prior to moving to St. Thomas as a loan originator had produced $78 million in closed loans which was far more then his entire office did.
I explained to him that I originally thought I would only be here a couple years and was really burnt out on the industry from the last five years of 80hr week chaos so I did not really pursue the job.

Bottom line is if you want a job in that industry here you need to bypass the H.R. office and find out who you need to talk to and try and get in front of them.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

Why would anyone want to hire you for just a few months? That may be a detterant to finding a job. There are oodles of biracial couples here, it should not be a problem.

My experiences on island never included being put down for being white. I had many ups and downs on island, but never because of my color. St. John did have some recent issues involving color of skin, but I never quite understood it as a color issue. I tend to think it was more of a rich vs poor issue and non-islanders vs islanders. There are people of every color and shade or whatever on island. Except maybe purple or blue or green. Novanut may understand that one. Anyway, it shouldn't be the only issue or deterrent to moving to the islands. It may be an issue, but not an 'in your face' issue.

I am trying to clarify, but maybe I should stop before it gets confusing again. Ronnie knows what he is talking about, so refer to his post.
