Hi!

My husband and I are planning to move to the VI in August! We lived in Vieques, PR in 2021 then moved back to the states to finish schooling. I am a nurse now and he is a teacher. How is the nursing/teacher jobs down there? I have heard mixed reviews. Also I am moving with my 2 small dogs and have heard it is harder to get an apartment. Is it better to spend a week looking around for places or is there sites to look at available places? It is early so I know I won't be able to really look until we get closer. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated as we start working towards moving!!

The rental market in the VI has changed dramatically over the past few years. Many of the long term rentals have been converted to short term driving up rents significantly. There certainly are teacher jobs available, but, be prepared for chronically low pay and awful working conditions. As a government worker, be prepared to have 12% of your pay deducted and put in the government's near insolvent retirement scheme where you'll likely never see it again. Nursing pay isn't as bad as teacher pay but compensation in the VI is far below the mainland and cost of living significantly higher. Then there's the electricity situation!
