trw - i think roger morgan was talking about you this morning - he wanted to thank whoever gave the homeless guy the broom because it was so nice that his porch was all cleaned up, he was going on for a couple of minutes trying to figure out who it was and being so thankful about it - since i'm guessing there aren't too many people giving away brooms to homeless guys i guess he was talking about you!!!

so one of our dogs was abandoned at doc hess's office about a year ago by the girlfriend of a guy that had to leave island for medical reasons and somehow we ended up with her and for the life of me i can't remember how it happened, she's a really old dog, hesses first record of treating her was back in july of 94 so she's lived a good long dog life here on STX,well her naiils had gotten so long i was calling her alicia after our "my people"senator and was ready to paint them red, well she has some type of skin infection that makes her stink really bad so off to hess we go and he examines her and tells me she has developed an allergy to tick bites and thats what making her stink so he makes up some pills and clips her nails really short and off we go, today is day 2 of her meds and she's not itching as much and seems to be sleeping alot so we'll see,he says he has developed an oral tick killer and preventative medice/regimen for dogs and i was wondering if anyone here is using it on their dogs

trw,
I don't know if he developed it, but he put Bentley ( remember the dog that wandered up to our house with mange?) on an oral medicine for the mange, and he told us it has everything he needs for heart worm prevention and ticks. So maybe he added his formula to the mange treatment. Anyway, no ticks! He also said this formula would not prevent or kill fleas. He never mentioned putting our other dogs on an oral treatment. We still get the Frontline for them.

hess told me that before he would put any of our dogs on this stuff they had to be tested for heartworms and could only be treated if they came back negative, and i remember him asking if fleas were a problem and i said no because if they were we'd have them jumping on us when the dogs are in bed or on the couch and i've never seen that, just the ticks.

It cost me $300.00 to get rid of heartworms in my last rescue. It took more than one treatment.

Trw--a belated congratulations on your anniversary! I have been working on a project for the last three weeks and am way behind on reading the posts, so I'm sorry I'm a bit late.

We have a group of folks camping on Coakley Bay beach. I just love the idea of families getting together and camping for the Easter weekend. There aren't as many people this year as there were last year. I am wondering if it was too windy and, dare I say it, cold? Has anyone else noticed a drop in campers at the other beaches?

I saw a sea plane headed for Coakley this morning and, having lived in the NY area, my first impulse was to run and hide in the back bedroom. I squelched that impulse and watched the plane turn, running parallel with the beach. The plane was doing a series of "touch and goes" in the water, practicing his landings without stopping. It was quite fun to watch.

Shortly after 911, there were many military planes in the air. One morning, a fighter jet buzzed over the house, making a really loud noise. I was sitting at my desk and immediately dived under it. Now why I thought a cheap, flimsy Ikea desk was going to keep me safe, I don't know, but that was my first instinct. I thought I had gotten over the plane thing, but perhaps not (lol).

We had dinner at Salud! (not sure I spelled that correctly) tonight, and it was just wonderful. That's the second time we have eaten there and both were just wonderful. They also had a great guitar player. A perfect evening.

For those who celebrate it, Happy Easter. Kim

Hi everyone,

Still freezing my hinney off here in Norfolk, Virginia. I may have to delay my trip back home to St. Croix. Can't seem to get mom on the plane. Well I will tell all about that later. JJ and I are just trying to suck it up and make the best of it.

trw, I am having some problems with my dogs and fleas. For the first year and a half frontline has worked fine and now it is not working. I am bringing some more back from the states because I don't know if the frontline we are getting on the island is old or what. I feel so bad that I am here and not there with them. We have treated their kennel several times and flea treated them in addition to the frontline. Maybe I should try Dr. Hess.

KLJ555, The planes are bothering me lately as well. Here in Norfolk (huge military bases) we always know when something is up. At the beginning of Desert Storm, 911, and this war, we have so much activity here. The jets are scrambling screeching over the top of our house. The ships all go out to sea. Then it gets really quiet here with all the military gone. When I arrived in Norfolk last week there was about 50 guys in camis at the airport. I said, hi guys you comin or goin. They said goin mam. We don't say good luck here. We say, see you when you get back. Hoo Raa, kick ass and take names. Well anyway, we have had a several large military transport type planes flying over our house on the east end of STX lately. Makes me feel weird like something is going on. I don't think I saw 1 plane the first year and a half that we lived there.

I talked to my daughter today who lives with us on STX. She said that there wasn't as many campers this year as well. Is is cold there? I mean, cold for the VI? Tomorrow here our high will be 45. As long as the sun comes out and we don't have that sideways blowing cold rain we can deal with it. I will have to put some socks on JJs feet under his crocks. No I still have not bought the poor boy any shoes yet.

Happy Easter everyone. I will be thinking of you all in the nice warm VI.

Tam

Will have to retire back to the States, trw but I'll go kicking & screaming while Betty applauds. 🙂

Speaking of 9/11 it struck me how quiet it was here with no planes taking off & landing when the airport was shut down. What a horrible time. I can imagine there are a lot of flashbacks for those close to the event.

The Easter camping seems to be a strictly STX thing. Doesn't happen here. The paper always covers it & it looks like a lot of fun.

No. I investigated Mexico, though & a little in Costa Rica. In my situation it's probably best to go back to the States. 🙁

Most people ,when they are thinking of retiring from the VI, are thinking about health care options. I don't believe that Dominica would be one of the top health care destinations. Nor would Mexico or Costa Rica.

I hope I don't get a lecture on how wonderful socialized medicine is in Canada or France out of this... 😉

I have heard that Dominica has an American run hospital. I don't know if this is a training facility or research facility or a hospital. Also that they have a large expat community, cheap to live there as well. Tons of fresh fruit and low crime. I have also heard that there is some research on Dominicans to see why they live so long. Maybe lack of stress. I have no first hand knowledge, just things I have heard. Another plus is that you don't have to give up your American citizenship.

Enjoyed a great dinner @ Dashi last night. We were sitting outside & it was chilly! We stopped by Zebo's for an after dinner drink. It was our first time there... great little place. They have an area sectioned off with a couch & flat screen t.v My hubby was in heaven,we left our flat screen when we moved & haven't replaced it yet. I loved the fluffy couch,we're currently sitting on rattan...just not the same.

Lord, I am missing the island. Still cold. We did nothing special for Easter. My oldest daughter took JJ over to her fathers family for a big Easter egg hunt and to play with all the other children. It was a great treat for him. Even though my girls father and I divorced over 20 years ago we have always been able to get along for the kids. His parents always have included my other children in their family occasions and treat them as their own grandchildren. I feel very lucky for that.

Hubby and I went shopping to Home Depot and Walmart to get some necessities for the cottage here as my mother is still refusing to return to the island with me. I am very stressed about that and will have to delay my return home to St. Croix in order to accommodate her needs. If you can't tell, I am a bit peed off at her.

Yesterday while out shopping we ate KFC. Huge mistake. Fast food and I don't get along. In any case I am staying close to home and bathroom today. Good thing I brought my laptop and can work from home.

Have a good Easter Monday.

Tam

Easter bunny? I think he works for the government & took the day off. So did Santa Claus, come to think of it. Must belong to the same union. 🙁
