Supply Disruptions During the Height of Hurricane Season

I was at the Wendy's at Sunny Isle a couple of weeks ago and saw a sign that said they were out of some (important) ingredients because they couldn't be supplied because of recent storms. That got me thinking. With the number of active storms in the area, is there a risk that goods that are supplied by steamship and barge could be delayed for WEEKS? I'm wondering if you could give some context to this situation with some actual shortages e.g. "you couldn't buy diapers for a month" or something like that. I'm interested as a business owner and consumer. Thank you in advance for your comments.

It's not just doing hurricane season. Sometimes none of the stores will have something. I remember for a couple weeks a couple of years ago there was no sour cream, one time it was lettice, diet coke, etc...Usually its just a couple of days or a week. It really is rare. During a hurricane or after is another story.

I'm in FL at the moment and the grocery store here is out of a few things I want. I was told the products weren't in stock because distributors have limited trucking to FL due of anticipated storms. Weather is a popular scapegoat for empty shelves even on the mainland!

We often joke that the "yogurt boat" didn't make it this week. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for empty shelves. Today it's one thing, tomorrow something else. The saying goes "if you see it and you want it, buy it; if you see it and you NEED it, buy two."

It's a good excuse for the wholesalers when somebody forgot to place an order also.

Well we might find out here soon. Ike and Josephine both expected to become hurricanes in the next day or two. Both are still well to the east of us. Not too worried about Ike but I think we should keep an eye on Josephine because she is still so far south of us moving west.

Hopefully, some brave soul will ply the stormy waters of the Caribbean to bring the yogurt boat to STX. It reminds me of the movie Perfect Storm where the captain takes his ship to the grand banks to reap the rewards in spite of the risks. Note to self: stock up on diet Coke.

BTW -- my mail seems slow lately. Coincidence?
