Is surf fishing (fishing from the beach) a popular type of fishing there?

mkoz,
As compared to the east coast Atlantic surf fishing were fishermen would set up , bait, and cast more than one pole, bring his/her cooler and chair and talk to anyone that wanted to talk. Such as what type of bait they are you using, whats biting, what do you think of those Mets etc. Most locals fish to eat, tourists don't really bring their poles, (mostly Golf Clubs). Tourist usually charter boats for bigger fish. So to answer your question, "is it popular," I would say no because it's not the same.

there are people fishing with poles and handlines from the jetty at Green Cay Marina every day. There are also a lot of people who use castnets down by the public boat ramp just past St. Croix Marina by Altoona Lagoon. I've seen these in use a few other places, also. You can often see people fishing with poles and handlines all along the west end beaches in and around Frederiksted, especially from the boat piers.

You are not allowed to fish from the boardwalk in Christiansted. I think they are trying to protect the tarpon that come into Rum Runners for sushi scraps each night. You also can't fish in the Buck Island National Park marine preserve area. Most other places are fair game.

When we went to Hull Bay (at least I think that it was. Very steep hills and a semi-secluded beach by some older condo's) on STT we saw a boy about the age of 10 surf fishing. He did have trouble with his line getting caught in the rocks and coral. My children went in and fished out his lure for him. He told us that he went fishing almost everyday.

That is it really, its different the rocks are where the ones you would eat are. So its not surf fishing its fishing from shore. Spear is my weapon of choice. But a boat is better for that to.
