Tax Bills

During the summer I received a tax bill for my timeshare week. Then the courts said the tax bills were sent out illegally or improperly or something, and the bills were rescinded. I recall being told to ignore it and a new bill would be sent. I haven't received a new bill. Does anyone know if there will be new tax bills sent out, or should I dig out the original one and pay it?

Thanks.

New property tax bills are supposed to be sent out in the future. You don't have to pay the one you were sent unless you want to. If you do pay, document the check and send it returned receipt requested. I use a bank check because sometimes they won't process your check for months. Save every scrap of paper the VI govt ever gives you, forever.

I don't like bills hanging over my head so I'm debating going ahead & paying mine this month. If I do & you want to pay yours, I'll take your check & bill along with mine & get a hard copy receipt if you like.

Hi, here is a news article from October below. I inquired around the news time below about what was going on, and was told that the taxes were due as were billed. I paid on the credit card form that they mailed out and mailed it back and a week later received a printed receipt of the credit card charge with a paid stamp on it. (Back in Oct) Nice system this year, at least compared to before!

Court Ruling Will Allow Government to Reissue FY 2006 Tax Bills

From the St. Thomas Source:

Oct. 12, 2008 -- A court-approved freeze on the recent property-tax bill recall will allow the government to reissue fiscal year 2006 bills and collect the revenue it needs to sustain the FY 2009 budget, according to government officials.

Trade, you're wonderful!

I'll send you a P/M. And I've found my bill.

Gerie: I am not sure if the law suit has been adjudicated. I believe that Jim Dern was the attorney handling it. One of the legal issues was that different groups of property owners were being treated differently. For example, the rate for time share was WAY higher than that for individual homes. This came from a previous lawsuit where businesses were treated differently from residential properties. I hope someone who is in the know can clarify. You can also go back to the archives at the Source and look for info.

Sideline: Am I the only person who finds the Daily News on-line archives nearly impossible to navigate??

East Ender....I also find that Daily News on line not only hard to navigate but at times hard to read. I think the software used for this service must be circa 1985. I will not renew until they get better capabilty.

Oh, and Trade, will you take my tax bill in too?

Daily news was run by a paranoid ex-accountant named Jeffry Prosser, who sought to keep all control over copyrighted material.

His kind of scum is not often seen:

BTW, this is a good alternative source for information from the USVI - there are papers for STX and STJ as well.
