Teachers- How's the school year going so far?

I just got an email from the governor about the re-dedication of the Arthur Abel Complex in F'sted. For those who don't know (and I didn't) it was The Old Danish School.

Quote from the email:
As many of you know, the Old Danish School played a very important role in our history. Under Danish rule, a free, compulsory school system was established in the Virgin Islands for children of the enslaved and lower classes. The Old Danish School was one of 17 schools constructed on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John to provide facilities for this educational program.

So...how are the classrooms, walkways, grounds, bathrooms, etc., etc. of the public schools in the territory this year? Are conditions any better (or worse). Is there toilet paper in the bathrooms? It was mentioned last year that there was not. Are there sufficient books and supplies?

Another quote from the email:
Education is a not a burden, but the key to success, responsibility, wonder and financial freedom.

Now, I really like deJongh, but I have to think about how I feel about spending money for a new office (didn't he have one?) if the school conditions are as deplorable as they have been in the past. Of course, I am assuming the government paid for the renovation, maybe not??

Good Night Anita,

I may not be a VI registered teacher, but I do perform workshops for a few schools on STX...

A year and a half ago I was given a tour of the new facility in F'sted. It was still under construction, but it was mostly finished-out as far as fixtures, flooring, and novelties were concerned. It was a depiction of grandeur in the time I was there, and I'd be willing to bet it will blow my mind when I return Saturday. I was fortunate enough to visit the private designated areas for the Governor, though I somehow doubt any of us regular citizens will be able to view those areas Saturday.

Funny thing is...even though our current governor will be a recipient of the building use, it was all built by a governor-wanna-be: Mapp. This revitalization project was approved by Turnbull, who we all know Mapp was close to...

MAPP was hired to be the construction company to build his own new "home". heh heh. Hope he's got enough corrupt backing to get him into "his new home"...

It may not be a direct fault, "monetary flob", of DeJongh, but he will definitely benefit from the contract to remodel. If you get a chance to sneak beyond the security you will see a bathroom that is equivalent to 100+ bathrooms that should have been upgraded for our kids.

By the way, I noticed a post you had in regards to Crime in our Territory. Hopefully all this backside crap will also fall into the hands of Van Beverhoudt...

The only improvement that was made to my room since last year was a reinforced door handle. This is to help so people can't pick the door locks and break in as easily. Hopefully, my room won't be robbed this year.

But, teachers are stilly supplying toilet paper, kleenex, etc. In fact, with the H1N1 virus scare, we were promised hand sanitizer (1 per classroom) for our students. But, we haven't seen these arrive yet. So, teachers are also buying hand sanitizer, Lysol, and Clorox wipes to clean the desks off at the end of each day.

But, I'm excited to be back. Regardless, there are minds that need to be filled with knowledge - and I'm having a great time trying to do just that.
