HD TV?

I am moving to St. Thomas from Chicago in November and can't wait!
I am lucky enough to have a good job lined up that will help me with the relocation.

I was wondering if HD TV was available on the Island, and if so, how do you get it?

If anyone has any info. or advice on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

HD is only available from Dishnetwork. You can even get the Chicago network stations in HD.

Cool Thanks,

Is getting the dish a problem when renting a place there?

You need the landlords permission. It takes a 1.2 meter dish to receive the HD satellite. But Dish is the only HD down here. For STT you shoud contact Sloop Jones on this forum.

Yes, Contact Sloop.
You can get sat 110 which offers the Bronze 100 pac and the PR/VI HD pac as well as HD networks from Chcago on a 30 inch dish. You currently require a 1.2 meter to get 119 and 110. Next spring the 30 inch will be able to get both sats. In order to use a DVR you need 119 as well as 110 due to the DVR software downloads from 119.

We just upgraded to Dishnetwork HD (from Sloop) on STJ and we have 1 dish - it's 4' and I think we could have had the smaller one but we already had the 4' so we just kept that - and it has 2 receivers on it . Not sure how many chanels we get in HD 30 or 40 or 20 - who knows, but all I know is that the picture is fantastic and we have all the chanels we need - woo hoo

They told me late October as of last week. I'm looking forward to it but won't quite believe any date until I see it!

And Direct TV will be offering HD in November.

The lady at DirecTV on STX told me that when the HD becomes available it will require a larger dish and a different receiver. That won't be free, she said, but could not give me costs. The larger dish comment leads me to believe the signal for our area on the HD transponders will not be as strong.

The problem is that one satellite cannot provide enough transponder space nor bandwidth to support lots of HD yet. As technology evolves they are able to squeeze more on. Satellite dishes in the states now "look" at several satellites. Some "look" at 3 or even 4 different satellites to get all the channels.

As stated on this board before. Dish is leading the way here with a 2 satellite solution. Not 2 dishes, 2 satellites.

Good and Ronnie. Please post your experiences with Direct when the HD becomes available.

I was and am still thinking about it for the football package, but with the HD Networks added to my line up I actually have with East, Chicago, and West coast stations, at least 6 game choices on Sunday.

It's like $120 when you sign up but a friend told me he pays normally around $400?

There was (is?) a special on Sunday ticket for $129 vs. normal local prices of $159. In the U.S. I paid $300 or $400 per season as I recall.

Yes, this is a bit troubling. I asked and was told the equipment installed would already handle HD. What was actually installed at my house is a standard definition receiver from what I can tell (it definitely doesn't have any high def outputs) and the dish only has a single LNB. If I get jacked for a large HD upgrade cost I'm going to be *issed given what I was told previously...

On Sunday ticket are you getting ALL the games like stateside? I heard it was like 6 games on sunday so that might be why it's cheaper here. Once again it boils down to transponder space and availability to transmit all those games.

On Dish I get networks and football from NY, LA, and Chicago. That's tons of football! Then you have ESPN in HD for Monday night football, and NFL redzone.

When I checked into Direct TV (just to get the Sunday Ticket) I was old they did not guarantee getting "all" the games....I passed and got Dish Network and love it.

Pretty sure it's all the games. I didn't count the number but the few Sunday Ticket channels I surfed last weekend all had games (and of course my team was on the national feed so I didn't need the Sunday Ticket anyway.)

Question: does the program guide for Dish Network have everything in english or spanish? We used to have Direct TV, but we got rid of it because it was through Puerto Rico and thus all the program guide text was in spanish. Very annoying.

I've been a DirecTV customer for about 4 years starting in Seattle. I don't know how far back your experience was but there's been an ability to change language settings for the guide in the settings as long as I've been a customer. In my current setup I had to do just that for the reason you mentioned but everything is in English.

Nugblazer.

The program guide for Dish is in english. For Dish latino and their spanish packages it is in spanish.

There is an audio setting that allows you to change the audio from english to another language if there are other audio feeds available.
