We have been thinking about relocating to STX. We will be spending several weeks there next month. Where is the best place to look for jobs, specifically mechanical/construction/facilities engineering jobs? Is there any kind of need for that on the island?

Thanks in advance for any info provided.

Check local phone book for companies in fields you're interested in, read classifieds in local newspapers such as Avis, VI Daily News, check Craig's List.

VIDOL - still waiting for a call back on a job inquiry that ONLY they can forward my resume to.
Maybe using spell checker on my resume was a mistake..........8-)

Thanks for all the replies! I will be down there for around a month and I was hoping to get some leads on possible interviews.

I think your options are very few. DirecTV here comes through Puerto Rico and the majority of residents go with either DISH or with Innovative cable TV. There are several resident DISH retailers/ installers so you would likely have better luck with them.

we had a puerto rico directv person here, they were here for less than a year. maybe you could get a franchise or become the one seller for directv down here if you can offer stateside programming and offer service.

Take a look at the footprint for this area and you can determine if we can get Direct TV stateside service here.

DirecTV originally teamed with Choice Communications and that didn't work out, nor did the subsequent efforts by the PR company to keep customers and attract new ones with resident installers. Their packaging, pricing and primarily hispanic programming doesn't appeal to the USVI market which becomes even narrower as Dish and cable continue to expand.

I think some responders may be missing the point.

OP says he was an installer with DirecTV - he could easily use those skills installing for Dish-TV since he would be doing essentially the same tasks - i.e. erecting and orienting the actual dish and LND, running the necessary cables & hooking them up to the receiver, connecting the receiver to the tV and finally configuring the receiver. Assuming DISH-TV is hiring installers he would be a viable candidate.
