Hi-
My fiance and I are considering moving to the USVI. We have some questions?
1. What island would be best for a couple in the 30's who want to start a family?
2. I am a nurse- where would you suggest I start looking?
3. What areas of town are best?
4. Can we get away with one car?
5. Does anyone know of a great real estate agent?

Thank you!!

Kellie

Hello Kellie,

There are families with small children living on each of the four main islands. St. Thomas and St. Croix are larger islands with more development, schools, businesses and so on. St. John is largely National Park but is also developed. Water Island is largely residential with little commercialization (you could count them on one hand... one fixed location deli/convenience store, a couple mobile food vans/spots and thats about it... no gas stations ect.). Best bet would be to explore & research all the islands, plan a visit to check them out, see which suits you guys the best.

Nursing - you could start with the hospitals: for the Medical Center on St. Thomas and Clinic on St. John try their website at http://www.rlshospital.org/. And for the Hospital on St. Croix http://www.jflusvi.org/.

In terms of 'town'. On St. Thomas we consider Charlotte Amalie downtown, everything else is 'country'. 😉 On St. John, Cruz Bay is the main town. On St. Croix its Christiansted and Frederiksted. Once you have narrowed down your choice to one of the islands then you might ask again about which areas people think are best or they prefer. There are some past discussions about this as well, use the search feature for the message board to look for those.

Having one car is possible; definitely depends on your schedules and flexibility of planning.

Some Realtors are island specific (they work only with the island they are on), some of the agencies cover all the islands. In any case you might want to click on the home button at the top of this page and read through the real estate write up for each of the islands, also there are some Realtors listed on those pages. Check out the other sections of this site as well. If you are leaning to one island in particular perhaps post which it is and other board users can share who they would recommend as far as a Realtor on that island.

Consider getting the Settlers Handbook, its a book about moving/living in the USVI. Its a handbook, descriptive, informational. There are a few books that are personal accounts like Life in the Left Lane and Desiring Paradise; they get into experiences, what to expect, adjusting and so on. You can find these books at http://www.vitraders.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=V&Category_Code=rel.

All the best with your plans.

You would be a bit biased, no? 🙂 Does he only cover STJ? Just curious.

Pia and her husband are good peoples (yes I meant to put an s on people). I would recommend talking to them.
