I am a recently retired executive from a major Silicon Valley computer company. My wife and I have been looking for years at a variety of out-of-country places to retire; Panama... Costa Rica... Belize... The Bahamas... many of the leeward and windward islands.

We live in south Florida now and have for 15 years so we fully understand livability issues with salt-air, bugs, humidity, hurricanes, even Saharan dust. It had to be a tropical or sub-tropical area for us.

We discovered vimovingcenter.com and devoured "The Settlers Handbook" and "Life in the Left Lane".

We recently visited for an extended period on a PMV, fell in love with St. Croix, bought a place and are moving there in about a month. The draw of being a US territory was just too much to ignore given the variety of *challenges* the other places all had on top of those in USVI.

Local insights here on getting cars and household goods shipped... what should be locally expedited by an expert like clearing our Jeep through the titling and registration process... what to bring vs. what not... what areas to target vs. what areas to avoid... getting our pet cat in... challenges with the BMV and the documentation beyond the normal Real ID Act silliness required... the financial incompetence of the local government... WAPA power outages... Internet reliability... the incredible value of property there now... on and on. For us, the pros outweighed the cons by orders of magnitude.

I just wanted to say how valuable this site and the forum has been to us. We are going into this relocation with our eyes wide open. Thanks to all.

Welcome to St. Croix! Keep us posted on how everything is working out. Many of us here on the forum are long term residents who like to share gossip, opinion and innuendo.

Feel free to share!

The first paragraph red like Nigerian letter. It got me fooled as he never asked to transfer his retirement assets for a small fee.

Welcome to the islands Mister. Don't let that US flag fool you.
Gov Mapp will take your money faster than Mobutu and he doesn't take American Express. That Panama may feel sweet in 6 months. Welcome and thank you.
