Tips for Finding a Job in St. Thomas or St. Johns?

Hello!

I am currently living in Georgia and looking for a complete change from the city life. I have a background in ticket sales in the sports industry, event planning and promotions as well. I was a collegiate tennis player, so teaching tennis would be a bonus if anybody can suggest how to go about getting a tennis teaching pro job too there.

Online sites you all would suggest? Do I need to come there in person a few weeks with resume in hand? Thanks!

K

It's very difficult to find employment in the USVI's (or anywhere in the Caribbean for that matter) using online sites. And, no, most employers don't even bother to read unsolicited resumes sent by email or snail mail. You have to be "HERE" and do old fashion face to face job hunting. Why you ask? Most employers learned long ago that that 90% to 95% of the applicants that are not "on island" who say the are moving to the islands never actually show up. So they no longer waste time and effort looking at people who are not actually "here".

There's not much call for a sporting event ticket sales person in the islands but you might be able to parlay your event planning experience into a "corporate meeting planner" position at one of the major resorts but that may not be easy.

Finding a tennis pro position is not going to be an easy task. Most hotels and resorts do not have "resident" tennis pros and those few that do already have someone filling that position and there's probably very little turnover. You'd have to be lucky enough to be searching for a position at the same time there's a vacancy - not an impossible task but it's not going to be easy either. For example, I know a golf pro who's been working at the same Caribbean resort for 10 years and has no plans to leave. It's the only resort on the island (not in the VI's) with a golf course so if you were a golf pro seeking employment on that island you'd have to wait until he either retired (probably in 15 or 20 years) or died. Sorry if this sounds harsh but positions for golf or tennis pros in the Caribbean are pretty scarce.

You might want to apply for a similar position with one of the major international hotel/resort chains that operate places in Georgia and once you land a position apply for a transfer to that company's resort in the VI's.

Hopeffully, when you get here you'll have luck finding a suitable position

Oh, one last point - the name of the island is St. John, not St. Johns. FYI - St. Johns is the capital of Antigua - a completely different island.

Excellent synopsis. I should also add that (and I know you didn't do this otherwise you might not have asked the questions in the first place!) you should read all the information that's available right here on this unique site. Starting on the left hand side with "Home" and ending up eventually on the right hand side with "Message Board", read everything there is to read so that you have a real heads up on what relocating here is all about. Good luck!

Sites are career.vi and vidol.gov. Sometimes Craigslist for the VI.
