I’m a few months out from moving to USVI, on or about May 1, 2016. I’m trying to decide which island to move to: STT or STX.? I have a few questions I’d like to ask and I’d really appreciate someone taking a minute or two to help me out. I’m a disabled veteran so I’m wondering which island can provide the best medical care with either VA or Medicare coverage?

Honestly we can all type a page of why and what, what island we like and then we will all argue why we are right and their wrong and then crime will get brought up followed by statictics and defense of the VI and then and we will all fight about that. In the end you'll end up confused and freaked out about getting murdered. You'll need to decide for youself anyways LOL! This question gets asked literally once a week. It would be more efficient to search back a few pages and just read all the info. 🙂 hopefully thats didn't come off snarky - just truth.

There are VA outpatient clinics in St. Thomas and in St. Croix but the only VA hospital serving the region is in San Juan, PR. There is a hospital on both St Thomas and St Croix and both accept Medicare patients.

Thanks for your response, I can imagine the question of which island to move is asked a lot, I’m just trying to make the right decision. I lived in Costa Rica for about 7 years, I remember drinking a couple of cool ones at a bar with a buddy when he said “Most people move here and think they are going to find Paradise, what they don’t realize is they are just trading one set of problem for a new and different set of problems” I thought he hit the nail on the head.

Hello ButchCondor!

There are two great guys, Eric and Patrick, in St John who own the Seas The Day villa. They live there full time an rent the lower floor.

Patrick is a veteran, so both of them are very involved in veteran issues. Check their website http://www.seasthedayvi.com/#!military/ox279

You may want to contact them. I think they will be eager to give you the inside scoop.

They are great friends of mine. Love them - will be seeing them this weekend. I'll ask.

Guess it depends on whether you're retired or working and what you enjoy doing.

STT will be easier to find jobs, get back and forth to the mainland as well as day trips/visits to STJ and the BVI.

Welcome ButchCondor and let me start by saying thank you for your service and sacrifices that you have made. I'm very partial to St. Thomas mainly because of family, friends and I just love the Island. But I also have to admit I haven't spent much time on St. Croix to really give a good comparison. The hospital on St. Thomas is great compared to what it used to be in the early 70's. I had to use them on my next to the last visit on St. Thomas and was very satisfied with the care I received.

Look at it this way, St. Croix is more of a laid back lifestyle or not as busy as St. Thomas, which has a big time night life and also more people and quite busy during cruise ship days. But either way or Island, come one down and carve out your piece of paradise. I think you will have a blast and another great adventure. I know I wouldn't miss a moment of my times on St. Thomas, I look at it this way, a bad day on St. Thomas is still better than a good day in the states.

as VICanuck said, your best option is Puerto Rico.
