Didn't want to add to the post on drivingon the left, but. Which side are you supposed to walk on. I'm talking about on sidewalks or in store isles. It would make sense that if you drive on the left, you would walk on the left. But it seems that 1/3 on the left, 1/3 on the right and 1/3 in the middle:).
What is proper?:) 🙂

i think it depends on how many "painkillers" you have consumed.

Hello All,

It depends on where you are walking. If you walk on the left side of the road than you will have cars stopping to give you a ride. If you walk against traffic on the right side, no one will stop. On sidewalks, tourists will walk on the right so you tend to do that as well, but in the mall or stores, I found that there are no rules. You just go down the middle. 🙂

If you're walking to just walk, face the oncoming traffic (i.e. on the right) and if you're looking for a ride or a safari bus or a taxi, walk WITH traffic and look touristly confused or stick out your finger while in transit.

In the local supermarkets keep yo' cart lef' unless the particular supermarket or store is suffering from a sudden tourism influx and then just go with the flow unless you want to smash into someone...

This post cracked me up. After moving to STT, we had family/friends ask us about driving on the left. We always replied that we adjusted to driving on the left, but not grocery shopping on the left. It took a few grocery shopping trips to realize that we were shopping on the wrong side of the isle 🙂 Shopping became a little smoother after the realization.

I've found for the most part there is no rhyme or reason to which side people walk on at the grocery store. And forget about signalling! 🙂

Ditto Beth. At the town K-Mart, it seems to make no difference going up & down the steps. Everyone goes every which way.

Hello,

Not sure if there is a 'proper' side... but personally I don't give much thought to what side of the isle or sidewalk I am supposed to walk on. I just walk... if another person is coming I move over to make room if necessary and likewise when walking along a sidewalk. 😉

For pedestrian-only traffic, if I'm walking among tourists, I walk on the right (such as on the Christansted boardwalk). If I'm walking among residents, I walk on the left (such as in KMart).

When shopping, you should definitely expect to have a lot of those "Don't stop the Carnival" moments when you are pushing your cart down an aisle and must wait 5-15 minutes for people in front of you and behind you who have stopped to chat with someone and are blocking the aisle in both directions until they catch up on things. It's not only people in cars who stop to chat without worrying about the line forming up behind them!

As far as which side of the aisle to walk down... you're lucky if you find one that doesn't have pallets waiting to be unloaded and/or that has enough room for one cart to pass by at a time. It also seems to be the norm for any store workers in the aisle to expect you to wait for however long it takes them to finish their task at hand before you shop in that aisle. They're not prone to stepping aside to allow you to grab an item off the shelf they are blocking.
