I would be interested anyone's feedback regarding how much water they are able to capture by cistern from the rain each year, if you know.

I just had a look at our present water bill, and are using about 5,000 gallons per month, for about $50. Naturally, we'd have to cut down when we move to St. John, but I'm trying to get some figures to work out the water budget. I see water is about 6 times more expensive so knowing what you get in rain would help do the math.

Thanks to one and all.

Depends on how much rain we get - obviously.

I have lived on St Croix for the past 10 years and we have only bought water twice. Both times we were refilling our pool after draining it for repairs. It mostly depends on the size of your cisterns. We have 90,000 gallons.

It depends also on the size of your roof. When are you moving or coming for a pre-move visit?

Never bought water [knocking on wood] in 28 years with 25,000 Gal. cistern , 2 bathrooms, no pool, in a modest house with a family who understands conservation. An alternative plan , which I don't use but endorse, is to have a gray water cistern fed from the driveway that flushes the toilets and waters the garden.
It entirely depends on what part of the island you live on as far as rainfall - the highest NW corner gets the most - the lowest SE point the least.

that's good news. i more or less was hoping that it was feasible to not buy water, but want to be prepared in case we do. of the two areas we are looking at, both are NW so that bodes well. i do like the grey water option as well. there's no reason to be using drinking water in your toilets if you have the option.
thanks for the feedback. good stuff.

God willing, it shall be in June. I haven't been down since July-August, so the sooner the better. I hope this was my last winter.
