I'm seriously considering moving down from the desert heat/arctic chills of ND. I've been researching the info on the web page here and was wondering, if a person were to have a roommate, and no car, what could a guy get buy on for making money??? Is it viable to have like a moped down there?? Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Which island are you talking about? To be honest when we visit St John and St Croix we did not see Mopets or Motorcycles. Everyone recomments against riding a bike on the streets. Too many accidents due to fast driving.I can only assume drinking and driving is also an issue. Most off all what are you accustomed to? Are you a smoker? Do you like to go out to eat or drink a lot?

Let me answer with a true life example that is continue as I type. First, let me tell you that I am talking about the island of STT or St. Thomas. When I first came I did NOT have a car for like 8 months. I was fortunate to find an apt I could find that was within walking distance of Red Hook, (mail, groceries, stuff) and Food Center, as well as close to the $1 ride taxi to get to places like the Tutu Park Mall - for K-Mart, telephone/cable company, Office Max and others, as well as the $1 ride into Charlotte Amalie when I needed to do that.

A current example is a young man that I just saw again last night. He is mid-20's and is working for one of the Parasail companies. He had one apartment that was all the way at the very top of a huge hill (mountain?), so walking it was a challenge, especially at the end of a long day.

I first encountered him when I offered a ride up the hill since he was flagged at the end of a long day. This was about 4 months ago. Last night I saw him again and was surprised to see he was still here, but he was happily living in a new place, a condo apt over at Sapphire Beach. I did not ask if there was a roommate - might have been.

As far as a car goes - I qucikly learned that walking got old really fast, and that once I had a car, it certainly opened up the freedom to explore even more of this fantastic place.

Hope this helps a bit.

Yeah, man, get a car. A moped will not make it up these hills. Also, the way I read your message, you are wondering what kind of work is down here. My suggestion is to try to find a job before you come down. I don't know what line of work you are in, but man, it would suck for you to come down here and not have a place to live, etc. Best.

Sorry billcresenzo, you don't get a job down here while you're in the states, you need to be here to get one. Sucks, but that's the way the world works here.

Big D, what kind of work would you be looking for here?

But Bill got one from the states! You are right in general, Paul, but there are some, usually requiring specific skills/education not available here, that you can find from afar.

Darrick: As I re-read your original question, I believe you need some more first hand information, AKA on this board, a Pre-Move Visit. I think you should check out the terrain for scooters, the job market in which you are interested, the cost of living etc. Paul is correct, you will probably have to move here to find work, unless you are: a psychiatrist, a teacher, a nurse, a librarian, or a physical therapist. And I would add, that you are not interested in making a lot of money! 😉

Well, up here I'm in the insurance biz. Don't necesarily want to get back into that, but something in that sort of line would be cool, since I have been in it for over 7 years. I have a good handle on the industry I guess you could say.

Well, there are insurance companies. It is a business regulated by the local government, meaning it's pretty convoluted. You would probably need to make personal contacts with folks in the business. Baker and Magras, Tunick, TOPA come to mind, not knowing if you are talking life, health or property.

Not to forget Guardian. Do the pre move visit and take a looksee if you can afford to. Other than that, do like the majority that come down blind. Find a place quickly, take the dollar rides and seek out a restaurant or bar job and get started!

I'm in the P&C side, no life or health. I got an email about a job opening that should be posted shortly, fleet yacht ins. She said she'll send me the info tomorrow. Anyone know who that might be with, or if it could be considered a decent $$ maker?? Not expecting anything over the top by any means.
