I’ve seen plenty of threads on what the pros and cons are on island, but what about the pros and cons on why you decided to move from the mainland? Please share yours here. I’m going to preface that mine might be jaded! :-X

From Chicago:
Pros:
Autumn
Near family
Ample amenities
Good job
Current friends
Love our home

Cons:
Public transportation
The weather
6 months of WINTER
SNOW turns into black slush
Only 46 days a year of 100% sunny skys
Trash and exhaust smell everywhere
Rude/ignorant people
High taxes
Public service budget cuts (despite high taxes)
People have a sense of entitlement
Lack of outdoor activities (also only when weather permits)
Hustle and bustle of the “rat race”

Plus there is a jar full of personal reasons, but I won't get into those now. *-) I’m sure I can add to the list, but this is what I thought up this morning. Looking forward to the move…
Eric

I'll list my pros and cons for New Jersey:

Pro:
I can find my state in the "State" field of any web form, and there is at least one cheap shipping option.
I can drive almost anywhere, as an alternative to flying.
Many things are inexpensive, compared to USVI.
Everything is available.
Everything works.
Laws are enforced.
Good schools.
Family and friends are near by (but we travel to each other now, so not a big deal).
The seasons. I can tell what time of year it is without thinking.

Con:
High property taxes.
It's too hot or too cold, and there are only 10 best days of the year (USVI has 350).
Snow, shoveling snow, ice.
Rude people.
Driving is a competitive sport.
I might have to drive more than 30 minutes to get somewhere.
Traffic.

From Rhode Island (yes, it is a state, not a place on Long Island, NY)

Pros:
Our nickname isn't " The Ocean State" for nothing!
BEST Italian restaurants outside of Italy
Beautiful historic architecture
Thriving arts community
You could drive from the beach to secluded woods in a matter of 40 minutes
Clam Cakes & Chowder
Born and raised there....roots go deep.
Spring and Fall are truly spectacular.

Cons:
Paulie D. from "Jersey Shore" actually comes from RI, Enough said.
Dirty politics
Spring and Fall....sometimes they only last a week.
Winter drags on forever
Most Rhode Islanders are born and raised there...they will pack a lunch for the 30 minute trip over the border to CT or MA.
Suburban sprawl is killing it.
Too many people still call me "Bobby". ( actually that one makes me smile now)

Seems like the pros are longer, from where they came, from those already on island. 😉

I guess the grass is always greener. Nothing a quick January trip to the upper midwest won't fix, though!
