Anyone know why there's no service on AT&T phones today? I had service earlier today, but just noticed it's out.

Juanita,

I called AT&T and they are having issues. Mine is working fine now on the West Side. I also expressed my frustration from being out of service 10 days last month. I received a $33 credit for pro-rated outages. 😎

WOW! I just turned off 3G and went almost instantly from one scrawny, little bar to five bars!

Depends on your phone. If you have an I-phone go into setting, general, network.

I got a $50 credit yesterday, let's bleed em dry. Lack of profit may provide motivation to refit the towers.

My phone has been in and out of service all day today. I wonder if they read my post about "getting a refund"!

ATT receives a hefty subsidy for providing service here, --part of the Universal Service Funds created by taxes on everyone's phone bill.

Part of the problem here is that we're dependent on one tower to provide service in an area, whereas, in the stateside suburbs and cities, if one tower goes down, another helps pick up the slack. Quite frequently I find myself reminding me that "I live on an island."

Yesterday it was reported on CNN that again AT&T was rated the worst cell phone provider in the US. What amazed the reporter was even though AT&T was last year their, ratings were even worse this year and they weren't even close to being the second worse. AT&T won the "distinction" of worst by nine points going away.

Jim

PS I got a $50 credit when I called and complained. Over $200 in credits since May.

Is this true for cell phones? I couldn't find a definitive answer but thought USF was only given to landline providers.

I believe that ICC (Innovative) was getting hefty payments from the USF for every land-line phone subscriber. This is a big part of the reason why they didn't invest anything into their cable tv infrastructure to offer cable modems at much higher speeds than DSL. DSL requires you get a phone line and for every phone line they provide they were getting a hefty chunk of change (I've heard as high as $30/line but that is unsubstantiated).

The laws of unintended consequences are amazing, the government creates the USF which ends up hindering service to rural areas instead of encouraging it!

Thanks for that Neil, interesting (and seems controversial to me).

If you are having problems with AT&T cell service on STX on Feb 9th please give AT&T a call at 800-331-0500.

My service has been bad since Monday and no service today. As usual when I called they have no idea that service is not working.

I spoke at length with the technical department this morning. The schedule says that two towers on STX are down and will be restored by 0200 tomorrow.

They also say that there is a new stx/east end tower to be installed by mid october, so hopefully we can have some redundancy.

I just got off the phone with tech support. The west end tower has been down since Jan 25th. It was scheduled to be repaired on the 26th but that didn't happen. The only reason we have any service on the west end is that there is some overlap in coverage from another tower.

If you're having trouble, call! The tech told me that they escalate the service ticket when a lot of people call in.

is the best # the 800-331-0500, or should we call a different # to complain?

That is the number to call if you can't use your cell.

I just got a number so you can connect to tech support directly 866-700-2105. No telephone trees or CSRs having you turn your phone off and on,

AT&T called me Wednesday evening to tell me the problem was fixed. The first call was so garbled they could not understand what I was saying. So she immediately called back. Same problem, neither of us could understand much of what was being said.. Her parting remarks were that she would let the network people know there was still a problem.

I have less than one bar of service today which I guess is better than no service.

Per an AT&T rep I spoke with the other day, all the new towers that are going in are supposed to be LTE, so hopefully that means there will be 4G on STX!
