"Working" the airlines (To your advantage)

In searching for fares to get myself home for a few days this holiday season I've thought of flying to someplace cheaper from STT, say Miami, then from Miami to my final destination. (Or for another example, from STT to SJU, then a new flight from SJU to my final destination). If anyone has done this or knows of someone who does, i'd be interested to hear about it.

Hello Kyle,

I have bought a ticket on an inter-island airline from St. Thomas to San Juan and then a ticket on a major carrier from there to the states because it worked out cheaper or because the airline from SJU didn't fly to St. Thomas.

Tickets are only gonna keep going up from now until the holidays. Search all the sites, yahoo travel, aa.com, orbitz, call the airlines directly and see what price they give you, move your days around each time if you are flexiable with the dates and see if you get a better deal. Try from STT to your destination and also SJU to your destination.

Good Luck.

Yes, I know someone that always books through SJU rather than to STT even though this is your final destination.

I was pleased to see on a recent search that Caribbean Sun airline is now inlcuded in flying from SJU to STT.....their fare is about $50. less than the major carrier.

Hello,

We fly to SJU using a smaller airline and then flying to our destination from there. We do the same thing coming back. Just book out of SJU and add minimum of $100/round trip for that small flight. American Airlines will sometimes book out of STT to SJU anyway, so you may check them. The only warning there is that they tend to up and cancel a flight to SJU and you have to rebook everything. I have done that already and since have stuck to my plan of flying a smaller 'local' airline. (Cape Air, Carribean Sun, Liat, are the ones I can remember for small flights to SJU) We use www.orbitz.com to find Cape Air and Carribean Sun flights, but one of them you can't book online. The cheapest flights we have found recently were with Delta. Just our two cents. Good luck! Let us know if you find something really cheap!

Are there any ferries between STX and SJU? San Juan is significantly cheaper to fly to the mainland from than St. Croix. I am intrigued by the "working the airlines" idea that Kyle mentioned.

Hello Darrell,

No ferries between St. Croix and San Juan. There is a ferry between St. Thomas and Puerto Rico but it only runs twice a month and it costs almost the same as a cheap airline ticket for the same route ($100 round trip, $60 one way).

I was looking for a cheap fare from Providence to St. Croix, and I found a fare for $350 into SJU. However, tickets from SJU to St. Croix for some strange reason were $250-$300!!! And this was on Cape Air, American Eagle, AND Caribbean Sun. However, depending on the dates you fly, it will most likely be significantly cheaper.

Dominic, I've seen much the same. Some of the dates I've looked at have also been completely booked. Other dates I've looked at seem doable. I think I'm just going to have to carefully plan out any trip I make this way. Or buy a canoe.
