Hello!
I am doing my first travel RN assignment ever and going to St. Croix. I am worried as the Condos they usually staff nurses at are full and they said they are trying to find me a studio apt somewhere. I am bummed as I was hoping to be in a condo with a pool, easy beach access, restaurant access, etc. I know lots of nurses are housed at "Golden Rock Estate". I don't know much about it but that it is a nice condo with the above things mentioned. Anyways I hope to be in a SAFE area and not some crappy apt complex in the middle of no where. Are there any travel nurses out there that will be in St. Croix for the next three months? I am looking to meet people! Also, does anyone know where a girl can go get some highlights in St. Croix (particularly Christansted)? Do they have hair salons that do color with foil? I leave in 3 days! I hope I am in a safe place lol!

I was just wondering is there a big demand for traveling nurses particularly on STT. What is the maximum amount of time they allow you to stay. Does the employer pay for housing and expenses? Thanks for any info. Justin

Joli at Monique's did a great job with my highlights.

Regardless of where you're staying, you won't be in the middle of nowhere. We're not big enough to have a "nowhere," much less a middle of it, especially if they're providing you with a car. 🙂

MNgirl: Do you know where in the hospital you'll be working yet?

Jsmith: They need nurses on both islands.

No condos called golden rock estate. Think there are some golden rock apt but those are not the nicest. There are some condos around there Long Reef and I can't remember the name of the one that has barb wire around it. Long Reef has the most studios in that area and is a good location for getting around. They are not the fanciest but I've know lots of people that have lived there. Condos on the beach are usually a bit more and the beaches they are on are not always the best for swimming.

There are places that do foil but be prepared to pay quite a bit more for it. I gave up hair foils, fake nails, etc living down here. I live in flip flops and put on real make up on once in a great while. Go out in the sun plenty and you prolly won't need them. 😉

Hey guys, thanks for the hair salon info! I am leaving in one day and literally was just given an address of where I am going to live. It is Orange Grove apartments. The guy had to go and couldn't tell me anything. It's a studio. Jsmith- I am working at the Herbert Grigg home for the aged, not a hospital, but a very nice LTC facility. It will be a change of pace as I have spent the last 2 years working in an ER lol! I love LTC and geriatrics however. It was the only immediate opening they had. Justin, they pay for housing, however not a car. Depends on where you live as far as furnishing goes. For example, some places don't have linens or a TV I guess. Mine does however. If you get put in a condo resort then you are lucky as I'm sure they have everything...and beach access! I will have to get used to the whole public trans thing, which is cool. I am from a small town and used to driving everywhere lol! Anyways, I arrive at 1630 on Thanksgiving day, when everyone will be eating a big Thanksgiving meal! I hope there are places open to go get a bite to eat! Thanks for the fast replies all!

Oh and Justin, my travel assignment is for 3 months, I don't know how long other ones are. I think you can only do 3 and 6 month assignments and stay longer from there if you want.

Who told you we had good public trans? I don't think you could rely on our buses to get to work on time each day, they frequently don't go at all. We have lots of taxis, a car is hard to get by without here, unless you live in walking distance of your work and shopping.

We in St Croix hope your arrival and stay in Paradise is a great experience.

The wife and I manage an old bed and breakfast, The Inn At Pelican Heights. Its mid island located and a ten minute ride to hospital. We have 6 units, one that the one and I live in. And the remaining with long and short term tenants.

We do have aone bedroom lower unit in the two story building available in the time frame you are staying. The unit has is turn key ready---you arrive its clean and ready to go, fully furnished with ceiling fans a a split unit AC in the bedroom. has its own porch and private parking.

The units are in a gated community with on site security(its located in back of ST C Condos, which is 5 minutes away from Judith Fancy). We have a pool, washer and dryer room, and all the items you need for a short term.

Our best feature---its a great location to return to after working hard all day. Its quiet, and relaxing. So much, one of our short term tenants from the hospital decided to stay and went from a one bedroom unit to 3 so his wife and daughter could join him on the island.

All our tenants are working professionals. Often, we often hang out at the pool and all join in for dinner cooked by one of us. The wife is on site most of the time, and we try to make all our guest have the best experience they can.

We are OKAY renting for two weeks, and if you discover something that more suits your needs, your not locked in. If interested, call me , 340 201 4537, or email me I can send your pictures.

PS We do have chickens who wander in daily in the morning, and Rhody The Red Roaster, does his wake up call at 5:45AM daily.

MnGirl-

I have many nurse friends and get sad when 3 months is up and they jet but then I make friends with their replacements and the cycle goes on. But they are the best friends because one of them is always off and ready to do something fun on the island.

Its funny, many people on island even in the medical world have no idea there is a LTC on STX. I do not know which agency you are with but lots of worldwide nurses who work at the Juan(hospital) live in Mill Harbour. It is the first complex from 5 corners on condo row. It is actually very close to your housing now. They pay 600-800 a piece for a 3 bedroom plus utilities. That complex has a pool, restaurant/bar right on the beach and is gated. The sea is a beautiful clear blue there but not really suited for swimming, but very pretty and has a view of Buck, from the pool/beach. Lots of people lay out there but dip in the pool to cool off. However the snorkeling there is quite good after you swim over the sea grass and pipes.

For transportation they have some cars that they share and take each other to work, beach, out on the town etc.

Sidebar, last time I was at smugglers cove, the bar in Mill Harbour, the head nurse or manager young guy, left golden rock to live there. I believe he walked to work but not sure. As everyone else will say if you want to see the island and take advantage of your stay you will want a car. Nurses I know rent from centerline and get about a 700-800 rate per month.

Anyway, PM me if you want details, numbers or have questions. Welcome to STX and be sure to check out Jump Up in C'sted on Friday. You are just in time for the biggest quarterly party on STX!!!

Orange Grove Apts??? Is that near Golden Rock Shopping Center? If so, then you can probably get to work via public transportation. Our actual bus situation is dismal, at best, but we do have "taxi vans" that run the main routes for about $2.00-$2.50 each way. They pick up in the Golden Rock shopping center and make their way down route 70, which is where Herbert Grigg is located. No set schedule, so always allow plenty of extra time. Also Golden Rock has a grocery, pharmacy and several other businesses which will be handy, so it's not a bad location at all. I don't know a thing about the actual apts.

Welcome to St. Croix. Hope it works out well for you.

What is the name of the LTC facility on STX? Is there a LTC facility or Rehab center on STT?

Herbert Grigg is on St Croix. Queen Louise is on St Thomas. These are both run by the territorial government- Human Services. On St Thomas, there is a private, CMS certified LTC/SNF facility which provides rehab services. No dedicated rehab center in the VI.
