Will my Verizon cell work on the island? And/ or incur huge roaming fees?

yes it will work but they charge you roaming fee ($1.49/min - I am not sure). Better switch to ATT. If you are still in you contract, you can call customer service and tell them you want to be released since there is no verizon service here. If they cannot provide you coverage then they have to let you off in your contract. They might tell you about suspending your contract but that one will resume once you get back to the mainland.
