I am looking into furnishing myself to save money. Where would I be able to find furniture on St. Croix & about how much is it going to run me for a living room... dining room... 3 bedroom sets.... I wouldn't mind finding used things (not beds)... Any info on any piece would be great! Thanks!

Ok...Garage sells are going to be the cheapest way, but choice is limited. If you're not in a hurry you can get very good deals this way. Always get there an hour before they open or the Dominican ladies will bet you to all the good stuff.

Animal shelter never has any good furniture, I've donated alot of stuff there myself and have never seen it make it to the floor. Something fishy goes on there.

So keep your eye peeled to the paper and this forum for stuff going onsale. There is also caribbean craigslist where people will sell stuf as well.

There is a consignment shop next door to Inter Ocean Insurance in peters rest in a strip mall. There's usually some wiggle room on their prices. I've seen some really good deals there and some really over priced junk, but like I said she will negociate.

Same with furniture stores, if you went into one and told them all you were going to buy you should be able to negoiate a significate discount. I would expect for at least 30 percent off, but would push for 40%. You wouldn't believe how cheap they get the stuff, even with shipping.

Betty thanks for such practical insider advice!!

For people considering furniture purchases and still looking to rent or buy their house or apartment, you might be surprised at the significant portion of rentals and home sales that include furniture. "Moving off island" bulk sales appear now and then.

A price-conscious friend told me a few years ago that when she bought several pieces of upscale furniture at once, including mahagony livingroom set, she saved significant money by shopping in the multi-floor mega-mall in Puerto Rico and having it shipped to St. Croix. Her savings more than covered TWO round trip airfares between St. Croix and Puerto Rice, and the furniture selection was greater.

Absolutely true, if you want new furniture, you will get a better deal by going to PR or FL and shipping it over. You will get an even better deal from furniture makers in China, Malyasia, etc and shipping direct from them. The furniture stores on island are mostly very over priced and sell cheap stuff.

With the exception of Sampson House I pretty much think every think here is either really overpriced or poor quality. I'm all for them making a profit, just not at my expense.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the very good advice. I'm not in a rush to buy it all, but a few key piece, I try to purchase & have shipped. How would I get furniture from makers in China, Malyasia, etc, as I'm sure I would get great deals. I will reluctantly head to PR or FL if I absolutely have to. Once again, Thanks guys!!!!

If you want furniture from Malaysia and China you can try Quinn House, Sweet Lime, or possibly Sampson (sp.) I know Quinn and Sweet Lime have custom furniture form Malaysia/Indonesia/China. We bought some antique Chinese furniture and some Malay pieces I believe from Quinn House recently at pretty good prices for what we bought (not as cheap as the stuff you find at places like Carlos but this isn't mass produced factory furniture like some places - nothing wrong with that I personally just don't want to spend so much for furniture that won't last as long.)

This is all very helpful info. I will be needing beds and dressers for 3 kids, nothing fancy but sturdy is definitely a plus.

Saw a sign today for the "Coakley Bay Condo Yard sale" this Saturday Am.

Coakley Bay Condo owners have a community yard sale out east in their condo assoc parking lot.

They are right before you come to Ziggys out east....aka east end gas station.

Not sure what time it starts, but heard you need to come early and folks are there early.

Happy hunting!
