are union pay rates negotiable?

I have not worked for a union before and was wondering if you can negotiate a starting salary with the hospital down there? I am looking at a position that pays about 5,000 less than what I make in the states. Would I loose my chances for that job if I ask for at least what I make now? I know nothing about this stuff, please help.
