i've heard the horror stories about how its next to impossible to find an apartment on st. john.... are there any other routes to go or places to look other than vi daily news or on this message board? any info would be great.

Look in the classifieds of the Daily News, there actually was one for rent in there yesterday!

Connections is a mail service on St.John. Apts and jobs are posted on a message board here and are considered to be the best resource, short of someone actually knowning someone who knows someone kinda thing.
I was over there a couple of weeks ago and found several apts for rent as well as jobs posted.
Depending on your circumstances/interests it is sometimes a better "bargain" to share with roommates. Not only do you gain a place to live, but also some folks with which to share time and info with.
