Car registration and title

Hi all,

Going tomorrow to get my Driver's license and thanks to a post a few months back (can't remember who from offhand but printed it out for reference...Thank you!!) I will get through the process with relative ease. My question now is with the car we are going to purchase. We are buying from the people we work for so she will go with me to sign over the registration, get it notarized and such. I know that it has to be signed over to me, I take it to get car insurance, go back to the DMV and then what?? What about the title in this situation? Where does that fit into the equation?? Does the seller have to go with me to get the vehicle insurance?? I wouldn't think so but not sure.

I tried to do a search on the topic but couldn't find out the info. Anyone out there who can shed some light on it? Plan on taking care of it early next week (after I get my VI driver's license!).

Thanks all,

pilatesgal318

Pilatesgal318,
After the reg papers a signed over and notarized, You go to your insurance agent with a valid drivers license off island is OK. Bring your Social Security card with you everybody wants copies of your SS Card. Then go to the DMV with your Certificate of Insurance, Notarized Reg, Drivers license, Current address, and don't forget the SS card!
Wait island time and get your plates. They will issue the title on request for a fee. Unless your employer is paying the bills, no need for him/her to be there. DMV will inspect the car for the window decal ( Maybe)! I think that's it!

Two doors over from the DMV is Amalie car rental. They are very helpful and can assist you in getting everthing done also they are Notary Publics and only charge $5 for that service..

Thanks so much, Lizard...copied it all down so as to be prepared...I will take a book while waiting for plates.

Another question, though, thought the plates followed the car and weren't turned in down here?? Guess I will find that out Monday.

Hopefully, the inspection on the vehicle, which is current and valid until Feb. of '08, will stand and not need to be redone...

Again, thanks, and I will post if anything is new and different!

Is the social security card a STX thing? I've never been asked for my SS card at the insurance agencies I've dealt with. I don't even know where mine is.

Trade,
For my car insurance, My Bank Accounts, My Wapa bill, they all required it and made photo copies of it. I don't know if its a ST Croix requirement only.

Hmmm, I might have used my passport. Maybe they accept that in lieu of the SS card.

I got my driver's license on STX about a month ago and they asked for my social security card as well.

As did my car insurance company.

If you are moving down here, you definitely want to bring your SS card with you!

If you don't have your SS card, the Social Security office at Sunny Isle needs to be your first stop prior to setting up all your utilites, getting a driver's license, etc. You will likely sit in line there quite a while (sit, rather than stand, which is helpful since it can take 1-3 hours, so do take a book along), but once you get inside the workers are very helpful and will quickly fill out your form and get your new card ordered. It arrives in the mail in 2-3 weeks rather than the 3 months I had expected. They'll warn you that the Social Security Administration will only produce 7 new cards for your account in your lifetime, so try not to lose them too often. She wasn't sure if name changes for women who get married or divorced count against the 7 or if it's 7 in the same name for people who lose their wallet a lot. If name changes count, that's discriminatory against women and there is bound to be a class action suit someday. 😉

Hi all,

Went and got the driver's license today on STT...no problems whatsoever and now, no passport photo is needed, nor do you have to walk from one entrance to the next to take care of paperwork, pay, get photos, etc. All is taken care of in the office on the right (looking at the building). Mrs. Brown is the data entry person and takes your photo...she was so nice!! Got there at 8:10 a.m., was 3rd in line, was completely finished by 8:45. No worse than DMV stateside for me!

I did have to have my valid stateside license (which you must surrender), my passport, and my SS card. Don't know if I will need the SS card Monday when getting registration, insurance and title but will post that info for fellow newbies needing this info...

It`s probably a good idea to get a copy of the stateside lic before surrendering it here as the next November rain could flood the DMV computers, just a thought.

Well, since I've been down here, my purse was stolen with my wallet, having my stateside license, and ss card in it. Now I don't have a valid stateside license. Do they take that under consideration? They must be able to call that state to see if I had a valid license, right?

Marlene,
I don't know the answer to your questions. But the worst case scenario, Take the written test and driving test in St Croix and apply for a new ss card asap. Here is my take on your home state verifying its you via fax ( it will never happen) with all the new patriot act laws under the homeland security agency, it's easier to win the lottery than get a duplicate drivers license without being there in person. I hope I'm wrong for your sake. Good Luck.

Marlene, also get a copy of the manual and study before you take the test. It is DIFFERENT! Force yourself to answer the questions as they are in the VI manual. Don't use stateside rules or common sense.

Just wanted to post my experience with car registration and title from Monday...Went with car registration in hand and seller by my side. Our first stop was to Messages, Mail and More to get the registration notarized (I know Natalie there so this was the reason for going there first). I went, on my own, to get my car insurance at First Insurance (Marian Mathes) at Havensight, which was pretty simple. They did not require my SS card there, but they did get a copy of my driver's license and passport). Drove back to DMV (or MVB is it??) where the seller met me (in case we needed her for any reason). Went to window #2, presented my registration and proof of insurance. They then they handed me the seller's title (a little bizarre, I thought, but okay?) and a form to fill out as the new "owner". Took that to window #1 to have them check for tickets on the vehicle. None, so I went back to window #2, handed them the filled out "new owner" form and old title. Had to get the title notarized (went next door to Amalie Car Rental with the seller...glad she stuck around!!). Did so, went back, took it to window #2 where they gave me a number, told me to sit. Waited for a bit and they called me and issued me my new registration and told me to go to window #6 (which is next door, where the driver's licenses are issued) and pay. Went over, paid my $40 and was good to go. Took me about 3 hours from first notary, drive to Havensight, and final payment. Could have been worse. Most of the people were really nice...better than my DMV experiences in NC, that is for sure!!!

You can say that again! I felt a real sense of accomplishment in getting all of that done! Hope the post helps others in the near future (it better be "near" future as the whole process could change in 4 months!!)...

Cheers!
