if you are unsure of which island you prefer youd better do a pmv cause they are all different and depending on what you want to pay or where you expect to work you better be sure before you get here. or at least have a very developed idea. money doesnt go very far with these high prices.

stephaniev: Welcome to the board. There is a ton of information here. If you go to the home page and find the "Moving Stories" section, you will get an idea of the process other folks have gone through. There is also information about cost of living on the different islands.

BTW, I looked briefly in the Island Trader (available on line) and saw that there are 3 bedroom places available from $2000 and up on St Thomas. You will definitely want to look at any place before you plunk down a chunk of change on it!

Have you visited the VI before? Do you have chidren?

thankyou for responding, I have already printed every moving story on the web site and read and highlighted. I have been researching for about 3 or 4 years, so I'm t thinking STX or STT more towards STT I also met someone here who lived there for 3 years and has a condo on STT(but it's rented) so I've gotten alot of advice and info from her.Yes I do have children, 3 girls, 13, 9, 4. I look at the Island trader every week, no never been to VI but have visited the Caribbean as a kid. I have lived in the tropics before so I have some knowledge of what it's like. I live in a very expensive place now, (resort town) so the prices don't scare me too much. my biggest issue now is finding a short term rental for when I arrive,by short term I mean 1-4 months.

Since you have small children I sure would recommend you do a pre-move visit. It's one thing if it's just you but this could be a really expensive disaster bringing children (or it might work out fine.) Have you thought about schools? All these islands are different & it's a little difficult to bounce around with children.

I am doing a PMV. My 13 yr old and I are scouting the place out before everyone comes over later. So, schools are one of things on the top of my list to look at, I am keeping in mind home schooling too.

i moved without that pmv thing and i am still in glory land however take the advice fellow board members are giving because from what i have seen it could get really carzy down here with kids, if you are coming on stx which is a lot cheaper and more relaxed pace and you live on the middle of the island you can find one really great public school and toward the east of the island you'll find another theese two schools are ricardo richards and pearl b other than that i would say seriously consider private schooling and when you do check out your teachers because you have private school teachers here without degree . and theese are known facts. good luck with your move.

I appreciate all the advice immensley! My husband and two daughters are staying behind here in Idaho until I find just the right house, I'm glad to know that the schools on STX are "OK" not thrilled about the possiblity of private school too $$. But I am considering home schooling, my husband will pretty much be home unless he finds work there, he is project manager for construction, any leads?? keep the info rolling in people!! look forward to hearing form you!

Stephanie: I recommend that you do a search for author "Teresa" as she moved here with 3 children also. She has been active on this board even though she moved back, so you might be able to send her a PM. I also think that you and your husband should do the PMV as there may be serious adult decisions to be made.

You can sure get some advice on this board! 😉

If you do come, I have a short term rental - two bedroom with pool and view. Look at www.stthomasvirginisland.com. I have a 12 year old daughter so any questions about schools, let me know.

I know, I think I have my heart set on Stx, because of it's slower lifestyle and I have children. I just want to hear alot about life on stx, gather as much info as possible, so anything you got I'll read.
Thanks for the info though- Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

I am hoping that we are going to be moving to STX during the summer, too..at least at this point I think STX, although I found a house I love in STT. If you don't mind, I will keep following your posts and hope that we might catch up if and when we get there! I am also in contact with another family that will be moving around that same time (also with children) so we'll have to all help each other out! My daughter is 10 and my son is 9.

Good Luck!

Tamara
