Hello Again ALL:

In Aug 2008 I hope to relocate to St. Thomas. My wife is a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in the states. Do you all know any prospective employers for her in her area of expertise, or how she would do setting up her own private practice in St Thomas?

Thanks,
Emprince

She will want to do some networking. I believe that there is a social work board and I have seen ads from at least one LCSW in private practice. We need medical social workers, but you are talking counseling, aren't you?

My wife was actually a Medical Social Worker in a hospital and for a hospice agency before she became a counselor in private practice. Yes, she has contacted the board and will need to be re-examined for license in the VI. We looked at the employment opportunities at the hospital located on St Thomas with no success. Where do you suggest we find opportunities for Medical Social Workers?

I "think" the Department of Health is a separate entity & she might contact them. I know a nurse who worked at the hospital but she was actually employed by the Dept. of Health, not the hospital directly.

emprince: A few ideas for a medical social worker include Seaview Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility, Seaview Home Care, Continuum Care Hospice, La Paz Hospice, Schneider Regional Medical Cener (RLS Hospital and the Cancer Institute (CKCI.) Some of these might have part-time opportunities. She will want to show up in person and talk to people once here. Networking this way is the best way to find opportunities/leads. There may be positions with the Dept of Health and possibly the Dept of Education as well as other federal programs (AIDS, Maternal Child Health.) There are strange quirks around here that take some sleuthing work to figure out. For example, as Trade says, the Dept of Health Community Clinic is physically housed within the hospital, but it has its own hierarchy within a different government entity. Two of the toughest things to figure out here are the government organizational charts and the family trees of some of the established families! 😉

I too am a medical social worker looking for work and hoping to one day move to the islands. It hasn't been easy though. I think it's just like everyone has been saying, you must be on-island and visit different places with your resume, etc...
