Dear Virgin Islands MoveOn member,

American Airlines is threatening to eliminate the pet travel program from the Virgin Islands—all because of one complaint.

This program, started by the Humane Society, allows for pets to find homes on the mainland. This program is vital in preventing needless animal deaths. We need to help animals find loving homes!

That's why I started a petition to Jose Nazario, general manager of the Cyril E. King Airport, which says:

The Humane Society needs your help. Our Pets With Wings program is in trouble. American Airlines is considering ending the program due to a complaint from one passenger—yes, one passenger. Over the past two years, American has been responsible for getting over 150 animals to new homes, whether through adoptions by tourists or being sent to our sister rescues in the Boston area. That number translates into over 300 animals being saved—because for every one we get out, there is space for another. All of the animals we send to the mainland get adopted within five to ten days. These same animals have sat in our shelter here for months.

This program was something that American Airlines locally approved in Puerto Rico. Since the complaint, the corporate offices have gotten involved, so the program is in jeopardy of being cancelled or limited to two per month.

Please help us save our animals and enable them to get a second chance!!!

I signed and posted on FB. My friend who is visiting now wants to take a dog back, but hasn't gotten any of her emails answered.

Thanks Jamison.

Best to call your STX shelter to ask for their manager who can help better and respond in person.
Not sure about e-mails getting answered. This is the VI, you know!

Have no idea what the complaint was. Guess you'd have to contact Edward Morales Gen Manager of AA in St. @ the Cyril E King Airport.
Could have been a scared pup making noise?? Who knows but 1 complaint should not put an end nor severely limit a program that helps save so many animals from death. The progam makes a positive impact on our overpopulated shelters and the number of animals they can serve. Thanks to all for signing and passing petition on.

Sorry but since I just passed it on, I do not know why it was taken down.
Hopefully, there was so much opposition to AA ending this program that they caved.
I'll try to find out and post when I know.

If anyone else knows the reason. please post.
Thanks.

signed.

Here's what is not sitting right about this situation with me. How can AA pull this program without major repercussions from animal lovers around the world, as in boycotting AA? This has the potential to become a black eye for AA, did they think this through? AA wants to end the program that offers free/discounted transportation for pets needing to go stateside, but they are going to continue to allow whiny pets so long as they are paid for? Something's not right.

As if AA cares about animal lovers boycotting them. Really?

I wouldn't dismiss the impact at all. One frequent visitor who signed the petition noted that in fact they flew on another airline on their visits to the USVI and specifically changed to American so they could help out by accompanying animals to the mainland through this program.

That link does work Oldtart, but there are not nearly as many signatures on it as there were yesterday at noon. My own signature is no longer there either...perhaps it is a new petition? If so, where is the old one? (question not directed at you OT, just putting it out there in general). Something is going on.

That's because it's a different link. The one originally posted was taken down for some reason and I posted the new link at 1AM today. Like me you signed the petition yesterday at the link which was removed so should re-sign on this new link. I have no idea why the previous petition ilnk was removed.

It's a shame when you try to save an animal and the city, which is on the list for the program, is not accepting pets at this time 🙁
At least I tried and unfortunately probably won't be traveling to that listed city again or any other city on the list in the future.

My signature was # 290 out of 300...

I'm mostly signing because I could have never moved here with out the pet travel; though my pets traveled in the cargo hold.

Anybody wanting to travel & transport a pet from the islands can google 'animal rescue' for the city they are going to, and will likely find umpteen resources. There are so many breed/size/age specific rescue groups in any city. I would think that Pets From Paradise would be glad to work with you and any rescue group you locate. I did a ton of rescue & foster work back in Texas. There were many, many groups to work with.

They presently have 570 signatures for the petition and the new goal is 750 so if you haven't signed or passed it on there's still time.

http://virginislandsdailynews.com/news/complaint-threatens-flights-to-new-homes-for-strays-1.1500374

This article explains the complaint. Some "frequent flier" person who complained about being stuck behind someone checking in the animals. Which is ridiculous, since it is exactly the same proceedure to check in a normal pet. I've gotten stuck behind a family with kids travelling alone which also requires extra time. And stuck behind a video crew checking in 30 some pieces of baggage. Sometimes the airport involves standing in line.

If this person was truly a "frequent flier" then 1) they should know better and be prepared for a wait. Did they miss their flight? I doubt it. 2) If they were an "elite" frequent flier with gold, platinum or executive platinum, and were in the top tier customer line, usually if there is a hold up on one check in desk, another check in desk will prioritize getting the top tier line moving and checked in (often regardless of the "normal" line). The STX airport does a good job of this--does the STT airport?

Hard to believe that 1 disgruntled customer could have the potential to derail such a life saving program for island pets who desperately need homes. He/she is unhappy because of waiting in line? Jeez, give me a break. Must be a miserable person to deal with under any circumstances to complain over something so petty that happens all the time and not just because of pets in line. ARRRRGGGHHH!

Thanks for posting link to article!

They are still accepting signatures on this petition so please continue to sign and pass it on, if you have not already.

Thanks for striving to help save this program and animal lives.
