Has anyone purchased large pieces of furniture (sofas, beds) from say, Pottery Barn or such, and had it shipped? I gather you have to send it to an expiditer in Florida. Any ideas? Merci!

Last time I shipped a custom made mattress for my four poster, I had it shipped directly to Tropical's LTL depot in Riviera Beach. It came the next week. Think it's call BI Consolidated. Never had any worries.

Just remember that you pay by the cubic foot for ocean cargo so it will cost a lot to ship big pieces of furniture. I just had something come through VI Cargo and the merchant thought he was doing me a favor by packing in an oversize box. Item cost $49, weight 10lb freight $36 for three cubic feet.

Not a problem shipping down here just don't be shocked with how much it will cost.

I regularly order items to be shipped by ocean freight from Florida and have had furniture from Pottery Barn shipped.
It is better if you have everything sent at once as most companies charge a flat bill of lading minimum in addition to the actual cubit feet charge.
I use Caribtrans in Miami and they have been wonderful. I have only had one item arrive damaged and their insurance company paid all costs.

I recently purchased a cal king bed frame and mattress set and even with ocean freight it was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than buying locally. I also had greater quality options available.

Note: Pottery Barn used their own cargo company to get the furniture to me. I paid Pottery Barn their quoted cost and they handled the rest.

We bought select comfort sleep number beds off QVC, cheaper than buying them anywhere in the states. After a week of fighting with them over whether they could charge sales tax if they delivered to VI Cargo, they said--we could avoid the sales tax if we ship directly to STX, you know...For how much, I asked, thinking it would be more than the bed itself...oh, $65.00, they said--and they actually did it, and sent them (2 king sized) via UPS air---it was on island in 3 days-10 big cartons. It then (don't you just love it?) took UPS a full week to deliver the beds (5 large cartons each) to our house on east end--cause it was so far, you know!!

$65.00???? They sure screwed up on that one. Did you find out what the actual charges were to QVC?

Select Comfort makes a terrific bed. My number is 75, but my wife prefers 35. Luckily our bed has individually adjustable mattresses..

Actually, it really was 65.00. Seems some major companies have corporate accounts that give them totally different rates than what you or I would pay, and it was select comfort that paid, as they came directly from their warehouse.. Our carpenter (stx) recently ordered a new fancy set of golf clubs from a different company...his air shipping was $14.00, and again they arrived in just a couple days. Sending a letter overnight with UPS or DHL to STX is about $40.00 or more, and it takes forever sometimes besides.

WOW, that's quite a difference in what you or I would pay. Interesting to know because now I'll look into buying some things where before I didn't consider it because of high shipping rates.

I just ordered an Urban Rebounder (fancy name for a small "trampoline" for working out) that weighed 40lbs. It was shipped via UPS and the cost was $8.95 for shipping. I keep looking at my credit card statement on line to see if they have corrected the mistake - reading this post gives me hope 🙂

Hey there,

I was wondering how you go about finding which companies have this sort of policy re shipping - I just experienced a similar thing and I assumed it was an accident (see my other post) and found it quite by accident and thought it was a mistake 🙂

I was thinking a sleep number bed would be fabulous - maybe you can provide the name/website/phone number where you ordered it from and who shipped it directly to STX for such a low fee. It would be a great thread if we could all share this info of any companies we have experienced this kind of service from - don't need the golf clubs but I'm sure hubby would - in second thoughts don't post that one 🙂

Thanks - and congratulations on your bed.

I just bought a SAT bed. It's similar to the sleep number. You can type in SAT bed, and there are numerous sites that will come up, but they all direct you to the manufacturer.

They advertise free shipping, so when I called about six months ago, the representative told me they would ship it to Florida and I would be responsible for getting it here. Well, I didn't want to be bothered, so I forgot about it. When I got really serious about a new bed, I called back. I got another rep, who said they could mail it, USPS, which is what they did. No charge!

BTW, I love it. If you like an extra firm bed, it's not for you. I've always preferred water beds and air beds, so I'm in heaven. Sleeping much better.
