I heard from someone that called IRB that the tax refunds are still 2-3 weeks out for those who filed March/April (me 🙁 )

I hope that is not true. That is going to put pregnant daughter right off her rocker.

that can't possibly be true. otherwise, they would have several big lawsuits on their hands.

Got a letter two weeks ago from the VIRB saying they had received our April tax return but needed us to come in with our daughter's SS Card because "the name on the return didn't match the IRS records on file."

Why? Because the data input person here on island -who's job it was to input our return info into the database, had typed our daughter's last name WRONG, ---even though it's the same name which they typed CORRECT for our other two kids and my wife's and my names listed on the exact same form.

When I got the letter, I called them and pointed out their obvious mistake -expecting them to pencil whip it. But the VIRB person said we "still had to come in with our daughter's SS Card to prove the correct spelling." When my wife took in the card, the gal at the counter just shook her head.

I hope they implement electronic filing soon.

I heard on the radio the other day that "tax refunds" are a line item in the USVI Budget. $88 million for 2010. This would seem to infer that they don't escrow tax income in anticipation of tax refunds. I hope that's not true.

...now I'm not just broke, but very confused...???
I had mine done through my tax person and it's a straight forward EZ form, etc... what's the hold-up and who's holding it up and for how long, and is it legal to do so and again...for how long?? GEEZ! This is why I don't do it myself. I'll give my tax person a call and find out what the deal is in "dummy" terms. If I find out something new, I 'll pass it along!:-X

It`s not illegal for them to be late(as it is not illegal for you either).
They will add late fees(it`s not much either way).

that's terrible. where does the money go all year round? i heard a senator on free speech last night say that she deserved her $85K salary...maybe if they lowered the salaries of all these people, they could afford to pay back those who actually pay their salaries. thanks for the 4% interest, lol.

It's almost time for a tea party down here. I didn't tell the government they could use my excess taxes until they felt like giving it back. I need that money myself! I think all of us ought to go rewrite our W-4 so that there is no withholding, put the difference in a money market account until next April 15th and forget about "refunds" Maybe then the politicians would get the message that we're not too happy with them!

that's my problem - i would really like to know the best way to do my w-4 so that i didn't have a refund at the end and that i would take more home throughout the year. i guess i need an accountant after all

I just got a tax bill for 2008 that says I owe $600 plus interest. When I called my tax guy, he said he has a form there with lots of small print explaining what is happening to many of his customers. It said that the Government overpaid, recalculated and wants half back. ( MY $600 and my wife $600 = $1200).

terry,

I don't understand your post. This thread is about tax refund checks, and I think you live in AZ, so why would you pay income tax in the VI, and why would they send you a bill, and why would the bill be for such an even amount of money? Perhaps you are talking about property taxes? Or maybe you mean you paid federal taxes and there was a mix-up with the stimulus money? It would be helpful if you would clarify for us, so that other people on the board can determine whether they might encounter the same problem.

I am talking about the tax rebate of $600 that everyone received in 2008. Didn't USVI residents get it as well?

Now I understand -- you had a mix-up with the stimulus money that was paid to you. No, everyone did not receive stimulus money; it was phased out once you reached a certain income level. Stimulus money was doled out to qualified VI residents, but I haven't heard of anyone having to return any of the money.

just got my refund check from V.I. Today. what a nice suprise. but it says for 2007. does that mean 2008 is still expected or did they combine 2007 and 2008? But hey i am not complaining so far. But afraid to cash it. afraid next letter in mail could say they made a mistake and want it all back. holding off spending it.

again does anyone know about 2008?
