I have a Sprint Iphone5 that I dropped and shattered the face on this past weekend. I do not have insurance on it but the regular warranty with the phone will replace it for for $229, at least it would if I had bought the phone at a Sprint store in the states and lived in one of the 50 states. Apple would ship me a new phone using FedEx if I lived in the states but will not ship outside of the 50 states. The Sprint store here does not do warranty exchanges for Apple. The Applecare reps have not been able to offer solutions. Surely I am not the first person in the Virgin Islands to be in this situation. Does anyone have any personal experience with this situation?

Unfortunately.... You would have to mail it to a friend in the States, and have them bring or mail in.
Apple or any of the carriers won't deal with shipping to/from USVI.
The Apple woman I talked to a few years ago warned me of this!
Good luck!!

I looked into replacing the glass myself but there are several problems with that. One is that it will void the 1 year warranty on the phone for any future issues I might have. The second is that the glass cover is glued to the LCD digitizer and there appears to be a very low success rate in successfully separating and reattaching the two without damaging the LCD screen. The glass by itself costs around $10 whereas the entire assembly costs around $240 plus shipping plus a couple of specialized tools that you need to attempt the job. So there is an excellent chance of ruining the phone if I try to replace just the glass and if I replace the glass/digitizer myself, which does not appear too difficult, it would cost more than just getting a new phone from Apple. I can always reactivate my old phone and use it until I go up to the states, but I would prefer to get a new Iphone5 under the warranty within the next week or so. I can also explore the option of using my sisters in the states as a go between for mailing purposes but I would prefer to handle it myself.

Are u on STT? There's an authorized apple dealer in Havensight, they should be able to replace the glass and LCD. It shouldn't void the warrente because they are authorized apple.

They replaced mine at Tech Box in STT(the official Apple reseller). If you think it's easy, Google the detailed video showing you how and come back and say that again. It's quite a process.

Radio Shack can replace your screen for less than a hundred.

I had reviewed several repair tutorials on the internet and should have said that it looked liked something I would be willing to attempt if there were significant cost savings involved, not that it looked simple by any means. I have definitely had my share of projects end up not quite the way I envisioned when I started them...

I just called the Tech Box on STT (I live on STX but could hop over for the day if necessary) and they do not do screen replacement on the Iphone5. They do the Iphone4 screen/LCD replacement for $120 but said the parts for the Iphone5 are much more expensive and not readily available yet. And although they are an authorized Apple reseller they don't handle the warranty work for Iphones, only other Apple products.

I called Radio Shack on STX and they said they only do repairs if you purchased a warranty through them and the salesclerk did not know if they did Iphone5 work.

Well, to close the loop it looks like the third time was the charm. I had called the Sprint store here on STX and talked to a sales clerk who said they could nothing other than sell me a new phone for $600 plus. I went by the Sprint store and talked to a couple of employees who pretty much said the same thing, but they did give me the managers name and number (he was out). I called him this morning and he said they would replace my phone for $199. I stopped by the store this afternoon and paid for the new phone, which the manager said should be here by Friday afternoon. So obviously persistance paid off in this case. I had talked to 3 Apple service reps and one of their supervisors, and got similar but different stories from each. The last one I talked to, the supervisor, said I would need to go through their Latin America office in Mexico. I talked with 3 different Sprint employees who said they could do nothing. And then I talked to the Sprint store manager who took care of the issue in 15 minutes. So, assuming I actually do get a new phone on Friday, we can close this thread. I guess the lesson learned is that even though the service/sales rep you are speaking with sounds knowledgable, there is a good chance that they are not as knowledgeable as they may think.

JE:

Did you purchase your phone with a Gold (or higher) Visa or MC? If so, you may be protected by their warranty & damage insurance plan.
