Hello,
I am a college student considering taking a semester off to move to the USVI. Though I am more familiar with St. John, I am thinking of moving to St. Thomas beause I thought there would be more job opportunity and housing available. I don't really know where to get started though as far as finding a job down there and finding a cheap place to live.I am not looking to move there for a long vacation. Haha! I want to have a full time job and a cheap place to live. Does anyone have any suggestions or point me in the right direction? I would really appreciate it! : )

Thank you so much!

The VI moving center has much more info but be warned that there is no such thing as a cheap place place to live. A studio on st john is running about $900 a month, electricity and water not included.

What kind of work were you planning on doing?

I was thinking waitressing...Not sure if that would get be the money I need especially for housing. Housing is my issue right now. Would housing on St. Croix be cheaper??

Islandgyal (I'm way too old to figure out all that integration of lower and upper case stuff which comprises your name!)

Did you research the first post by forum moderator "Islander" on this page before asking? There is a wealth of information available right at your fingertips right on this forum.

Major tsk tsk to cruzbaybabe and trade for NOT kindly directing this new poster to all the available information that's on this forum. Or maybe you've not gone there either? Cheers and Happy New Year!

Maybe because I wanted to know what kind of work she was looking for & that's not available anywhere else on this forum? 🙂

Thank you so much! I will definitely check it out. Is it unrealistic for me to be looking for jobs and places to live there for just a semester? Does anyone know what job availability is like down there??

Islandgyal,

I think once you read through all the info on Islander's first post and then do some further research (this forum has a search engine) you'll have a better grasp of how things work here. STT is probably your best bet for one semester but your timing needs to be right so it would help to know at what time of the year you're thinking of being here and for how long a period.

Oh, Trade, don't get your knickers in a twist. A college student looking to take off a semester to come to the VI is almost inevitably going to be looking for employment in the hospitality industry and Islandgyal already mentioned waitressing...

Good luck in your research, Islandgyal. You sound like a lovely young lady and I have a feeling that you won't have too much of a problem finding a job here. Just do all that basic research and then there are several of us on this forum who might be able to steer you in good directions. Cheers - and Happy New Year which is just a short while away!

Sorry to disappoint, STT Resident but my "knickers" are not in a twist & she hadn't mentioned what kind of work she was going to do when I asked. A friend's niece came down in college & worked for a landscaper so broad generalizations aren't always correct. Carry on!

Hey all!
I posted on here last week but I have another question about housing...Let me explain my situation. I'm a college student at Penn State looking to take a semester off to work either at the Westin on St. John or the Marriot on St. Thomas. I will be down there for about 3-4 months. Can any of you offer me any tips on finding temporary housing down there? I've been calling bed and breakfasts as well as guest houses. However, they seem to be tenative on letting me stay that long. The going rate seems to be about $700-$1200/month. If anyone on here lives down there, would they be willing to rent out a room? Thanks for any advice! : )
