moving to St. John

Hello all~

II am seriously considering moving to St. John come September. I am looking to get a more complete view of what I should expect. How necessary is a car to island life? How realistic is it to expect to find a long term one bedroom rental? Are there any alternatives to regular apartments I should consider? When would be a reasonable time to start looking?

I would so much appreciate any and all feedback I can get on how to make this dream a reality. I have never considered anything like this before, but after losing my job and a very difficult year I think it is time!

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Hi nbrogan1 -
We are moving in the May June time frame to STJ. Exciting huh~Scary huh~. My fiancé begins his new job May 5th and the kids and I will follow in June when school lets out. Do you have friends on the island and have you ever stayed there? Everyone and I mean everyone recommends a PMV {pre move visit} prior to moving.

Most landlords won't even consider renting to you unless you're here and don't rent anything sight unseen. The economy here is not good, just like everywhere else. You're coming at the slowest time of the year also. Have you ever been to the VI before? It's very expensive to live anywhere down here & St. John is the most expensive of all. Best of luck to you.
