Moving to STX and have questions!

Hi everyone,

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this board as it's been incredibly helpful. I'm moving down to St. Croix in a couple weeks for a job and just trying to get as much information as possible before my move. I just applied for the job 2 weeks ago and was hired a few days ago so it's all happening very fast and not giving me a ton of time to research!

A couple of questions:
1. I'd love to find a church down there. I currently go to a contemporary service at a Methodist church and love it. I'm open to other denominations but would like to find something that's (somewhat) similar to my church (as in, not super preachy/doesn't shove religion down your throat). I was hoping some of you might have suggestions of churches to check out.
2. It would be awesome to meet up with other young people (I'll be turning 28 three days after I move there!) since I'll be moving there not knowing anyone and am definitely a little nervous!
3. Are there any things you would suggest definitely bringing from home, like certain foods/other items that are hard to find or just anything you wished you had thought of before moving there?

Thank you all in advance. This is SUCH a great community board 🙂

Sara

Facebook is a great place to meet people. Rainbow Beach on Sundays is the young "Sunday Funday" hangout. Know that if you just get involved in stuff you'll meet people, it's pretty easy!

3. Are there any things you would suggest definitely bringing from home, like certain foods/other items that are hard to find or just anything you wished you had thought of before moving there?

Everyone has their "thing" - while many foods are available here, many aren't. If there are certain food items that are comfort foods to you, or makeup/hair/perfume items, you should bring those along. Whatever you reach for when you want a little comfort or to feel special or spoiled or whatever, bring it!

Welcome to the island, you're a great age to be here, there's a lot of young people here. Just keep your head on your shoulders and don't let things get too crazy (i.e. drinking, staying out late in bad areas, etc.) and you'll do great!

Thanks Julie! I'm definitely planning to get involved in as much as possible (when I'm not working or traveling for work). I'll have to check out Rainbow Beach. Thanks for that suggestion.

I'll have to think of my comfort food/items. So much of it I probably take for granted!

I'll have a pretty intensive job and I did the party thing in my early 20's so I think my crazy days are (mostly) gone. I work with kids and that's pretty tough to do with a hangover/too little sleep 😉 haha

Thanks so much! I'm so excited and definitely counting down the days. Just got my flight today! Eek!

Hi

welcome to the board and STX!

my husband and I just moved here 3 months ago and we loved it.
As far as church, can't help you sorry.

meeting young people is easy, just go to the beaches on Sunday (Cane Bay, Rainbow) or any of the beachside bars. We have found people here are pretty friendly, easy to talk to and helpful!!

Check out gotostcroix.com and stcroixcalendar.com for events. There are clubs and organizations you can join and/or volunteer. If you like hiking, there is a hiking association here. If you like gardening/sustainable lifestyle, there is Ridge2Reef farm with their eco lodging. If you have some specific interest in mind, ask in the forum to find out if you can find it on island.

As far as items from home, I agree with JulieKay. We didn't bring tons of stuff here due to some personal circumstances (long story) but we managed okay. For these 3 months that we've been here, personally I couldn't think of anything I wished I have brought from home except some Asian sauce/seasonings/snacks 😛 And if you think of one after you move here, hopefully you have family/friends back home who can send it to you via flat rate.

you can always PM us for questions as well.

Good luck!!

Hi jwidjaja

Thank you for the reply!!

Definitely glad to hear from multiple people that it's easy to meet people. That definitely is comforting to hear 🙂

Thanks so much for the website recommendations. I'll definitely check those out. I love to hike, and I volunteer all the time in North Carolina. I started a nonprofit for young professionals to volunteer here so it's a huge part of my life. I also found the "Volunteer St. Croix" Facebook page which seems pretty active.

I think I'll have PLENTY of visitors (all my friends/family are already looking at flights haha) so getting things brought to me or mailed shouldn't be a problem. I guess I won't worry too much about forgetting "essentials."

Thanks again for the help. Seems like a very friendly place so far!

And it's easy and cheap to ship stuff here via VI Cargo or Paradise freight. I do it all the time.

hi

welcome to the board and st croix. i cant think of any food item you should need to bring. you can find pretty much what you need though you might have to go to more than one store for it.

a lot of people hang out at cane bay, the bars/restaurants in downtown. i dont know, other than work and bars where you would meet people.

you are coming at the right time. jump up, boat parade and the gallows bay open house all coming up for the holidays. they have free movie night downtown 1 saturday a month, free jazz in both christiansted and fredericksted. i dont know if they still have it, but there was a thursday art walk.

relax and have fun

It occurred to me re-reading my post that I sound like a total Mom (I have a teenage daughter) - ah, I guess I've finally made the jump. Time to find those Mom jeans!

congrats on the job, and Welcome! fantastic and open community on the island so just jump in and introduce yourself (and a warm and hearty "Good Morning/Afternoon/Night" goes a long way...). beaches/bars are a great place to meet most folks, and not even so much for the 'party' crew, just places to hang out. - check for nights with Kiki and the gypsies and you'll find a good crowd and a fantastic show!...speedy1 had some good thoughts with plenty of fantastic upcoming social events.... Volunteer St Croix is a great resource - also try and schedule a slow down dinner at Ridge to Reef farm and you'll have an amazing night, wonderful food and meet some cool folks....... there are also some activities: jump in on beach volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee on M/Th at UVI, Salsa Dancing nights, Lunar paddles and paddlefitness at Teres Veho, yoga all over, Fin Folks swim club, VI Pace runners events (stamina sports is a good spot to check in and get similar options and contacts/schedules)....

as for a church recommendation -- i've got a number of friends that attend the St Croix Reformed Church and really enjoy it (Stx Reformed

welcome and have fun!

Word of advice, don't use the term "Y'all when you get there. The locals will pick on you, take it from someone who knows, I grew up in the south as well hahahahahahahaha.

I say yall all the time. My advice, be patient and humble and be yourself. Leave your expectations in the states.

Moved here 4 weeks ago and can say my experience has been great! Easy to get to know people and I haven't had one person say anything other than to ask where I am from when I give out a big Texan YA'LL.

Haha I think I'll keep the "y'all" unless I find myself friendless after a couple months. Then maybe I'll blame the "y'all" and drop it 😉

I live in Raleigh, NC right now. Not sure how long I'll be in STX but the job is for 3-6 months, possibly longer, so we'll see!

Thank you guys!

I use it, too, y'all.
In school, after being from here, I had roommates from Canada and Georgia so we all sounded a bit funny after rooming together for a couple yrs.

Definitely know Pinehurst. Beautiful place. If you like golfing and/or horseback riding you will be in heaven. I used to go down there all the time for horse shows.
