i thought it was both the dems and republicans not coming together for the greater good, i did not realize it was only one party that needed to compromise? none of them from the president on down are willing to compromise.

It's just so easy to blame "the evil Republicans". They are ALL at fault. Period.

Judge orders Virgin Islands beach reopened

ST. CROIX, U.S. Virgin Islands (CNN) -- A federal judge Wednesday ordered the National Park Service to reopen the Buck Island Reef National Monument despite the ongoing federal budget crisis.

Two Virgin Island residents sued in federal district court to have the park reopened, arguing they were being hurt by the closure of the beach at Buck Island. They said the shutdown had denied them the ability of "freely enjoying a cherished natural resource." They further argued that the Park Service had violated the federal Open Shorelines Act by closing the beach.

The National Park Service argued it had no choice because the budget crisis had forced it to reduce the normal staff of "two to three employees" to one employee and one volunteer.

Further, the government contended that it might suffer legal liability if it opened the beach at Buck Island "in the present understaffed condition."

But Judge Raymond L. Finch ruled that the Park Service must reopen the site. He said he felt the liability of the government would not be increased by operating with one employee rather than the usual two or three.

Finch said he believed the plaintiffs were likely to prevail if the case went to trial and issued an order immediately requiring the Park Service to reopen the beach.

Buck Island, located off the North-East coast of St. Croix, became a national monument under a proclamation signed by President John F. Kennedy on December 28, 1961.

congasan: I especially like the quote from the anonymous Park Ranger:
“We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”

I can only hope that people in all parties - Left, Right, and somewhere hovering around either or, can stop listening to the extremes and the conspiracy theorists. So much irrational fear being tossed around (especially online) these days. The fringe websites that know they have a captive audience which they can whip into a fearful angry froth and fervor especially are doing none of humanity any good.

I will say I do find it hard to believe that Obama has been doing nothing the last few days but sit in his office and write out order after order for all of these specific shut-down items I've seen all over conservative media and websites (and Facebook). He's been a busy man if that's the case! 😉 But really it reads more to me as over-zealous enforcement of general orders that have been issued, by either well-meaning people or by-the-book people (such as happens in the military, orders and all that). People are flawed and biased and take all sorts of actions based upon their own external view. And there's going to be confusion, such as in the case of the Chaplains above, where one order doesn't fit everyone or every circumstance, so then changes need to be made. These things always come up, and there's going to be a lot of this sort of thing from both parties before this is all over.

(p.s. I vote this goes under the coconut tree)

They still have the park road locked, which makes for a nice car-free run or walk... 😉
