New Coffee Bar on STT
All:
We just found a new coffee bar on STT.......Picaso's Coffee Bar....on Smith Bay (Road) East End......located just between the old Renaissance and Point Pleasant Resort. The couple that owns the place is from near our home town (Point Pleasant, NJ).
The coffee is great and so are the pastries and quiche......plus they have a full bar....slot machines....Bud Lights are $1.25 all day....and they're open for Super Bowl Sunday........
Stop in and tell them that the Future Islander sent you.

I was wondering how they expected to survive over there, but you just solved the riddle. It is a front for video lottery terminals, aka the crack cocaine of gambling!
Don't be shy, EE; tell us what you really think! 😀
they also have free wi-fi and they chiil the coffee before they make you an iced coffee

I don't condone gambling either.......but comparing them to crack cocaine distribution was unfair.
They are a young couple trying to start a business here.

FI: I am sorry. The crack cocaine remark is not mine- it was used by the opponents to the VLTs when our illustrious legislature passed the bill to allow them. This was after St Thomas voted NOT to allow gambling. I understand that these folks are trying to start a business. Unfortunately, they will probably make much more on the VLTs than they will on coffee and from people who can least afford to lose. VLTs are much more addictive and have a poorer pay out than other gambling methods. You can Google them if you want to find out more.
dnt, I will get off my soap box now! 😉
East Ender:
I agree.
Years ago we started gambling in NJ (Atlantic City)......I voted against it. But the majority voted for it.

and in minnesota we had pull tabs which were referred to as "cardboard"cocaine
FI: There is casino gambling, which St Thomas voted down and St Croix voted for...and then there are video lottery terminals. Two different things. I would sure like to know from the Crucians if the casino has really helped the economy. The majority here on St Thomas did not want casino gambling, but the legislature put through the VLTs as part of the lottery. Anyway, I guess my position is fairly clear by now... 😉
East Ender,
I am not a West Indian Crucian, but I live here (STX), its my home. I have not followed the money stream from the casino to the coffers of the USVI Govt. However from the general appearances "the casino" does employ quite a few islanders. It is my opinion that STX was always considered the red headed step child of the USVI and needed a shot in the arm to be competitive for tourist trade dollars. There are a couple more casinos on the drawing board to be built "whenever". Only time will tell if its a good thing or not.
The casino is small, and stories abound about locals only blowing paychecks weekly, when I've been there it was more tourists than crucians
Folks:
I think we've gotten off the subject.
It's a nice coffee bar....good coffee. Try it.
